Therefore, they cannot be put together. For example, in Kauśāmbī there was a wealthy Brahmin who possessed a great deal of wealth, enjoying a vast and spacious life. He was very stingy, not even giving offerings to crows, and was able to grasp everything. He possessed a great deal of property and gold, and if he could be made to follow, the monastery of the Sangha would be completed. Thinking in this way, he spent great effort waiting for dawn. In the morning, he put on his undergarment, took his bowl and Dharma robes, and went to Kauśāmbī to beg for alms. He went through two or three houses begging for alms, and taking a small amount of flour, he began to enter the Brahmin's house. The gatekeeper stopped him, saying: "Venerable one, wait, do not enter!" The venerable Ānanda said: "Well then, the Blessed One has said that there are five places that are not our proper sphere of activity: the dwelling of musicians, the dwelling of prostitutes, the dwelling of debtors, the dwelling of outcastes, and the royal palace. Is this house one of those, or why do you prevent me?" The gatekeeper said: "Venerable one, you may say much, but this house is not one of those. This is the house of such-and-such a Brahmin." Ānanda thought: "Since there is not even a temporary meeting, what else could there be?" Thinking in this way, he was turned away at the gate and sat down, disheartened. Then, a householder's son was born, and a joyous celebration with twelve participants, with dancing, singing, and cymbals, began. When the gatekeeper was distracted by those things and not watching the gate, the venerable Ānanda entered the Brahmin's house. The Brahmin saw him practicing beautiful conduct, purifying the land free from desire, and said: "Venerable Ānanda, it is good that you have come! Please sit on this seat." Ānanda sat down purposefully, and not finding an opportunity to speak, Ānanda said: "Brahmin, I have obtained a small amount of flour from begging. Please have it sifted and given to me." The Brahmin instructed his daughter, saying: "Daughter, gather the venerable one's alms flour and offer it." As the daughter began to sift, the venerable Ānanda put the flour

The observation began. The Brahmin said: Holy one, what are you observing? He replied: Observing sentient beings. If they exist, what should be done? They should not be eaten. If they are eaten, what is the fault? Brahmin, the Blessed One said that if killing is constantly practiced and habituated, and done repeatedly, after the body is destroyed and death occurs, one will fall into evil destinies and evil paths, and be born in the hells of sentient beings. And if, in this very life, one meets with people on equal footing, one will still be short-lived and have many illnesses. Thus, the paths of the ten non-virtuous and ten virtuous actions were extensively described. That Brahmin became very pleased and, having prepared clean food himself and filled the vessel with merit, said: Holy one, for the sake of your compassion, please accept these. The long-lived one thought: If I accept this, it would be like cooking in a wooden vessel, and this first time would become the last. Thinking this, he said: Brahmin, I should enjoy this small amount of flour that I have begged for. How can I take what is given in faith and then throw it away? Therefore, I will not accept your offering. The Brahmin said: Holy one, the practice of us Brahmins is that if we find something bad and then find something good, we abandon the bad and enjoy the good. What fault is there in that for you? He replied: Brahmin, we have properly taken the precepts. You Brahmins have not properly taken the precepts, so you Brahmins can do as you please. For us, the Blessed One has taught the four noble lineages. What are the four? Being content with any Dharma garment, being content with any alms, being content with any dwelling, and delighting in renunciation and meditation, these are the noble lineages. Then, that Brahmin became very devoted and said: Holy one, this is your residence, please come at any time. He replied: Brahmin, your doorkeeper is like the staff of Yama, not letting anyone enter, so guard it well.
