One should be taught not to engage in gross and fundamental matters in any way. When unguarded, one should not sleep during the day after putting down one's work. One should not go to the place previously spoken of by a woman. One should not go to the place where non-humans previously began to cause harm. One should not expose one's excretory organs and urinate in front of a dog. One should not dwell in a monastery where there is a danger to life. One should not cross a river naked where there is a danger of losing one's limbs. When crossing a river by boat, entering a cattle pen, inspecting a well, and walking on a plank, one should consciously avoid touching a woman. Those who have gone forth should carefully examine and then place a non-woman nearby. Because of strong desire, one should carry a container. The remedy for this is that one can recover from a fall through a transgression of a transgression that results in defeat, a gross transgression, confession of a fundamental transgression, repentance, and both. The remedy for a transgression of a transgression that results in defeat is that if it is a transgression that should be restrained, then there is no need to confess and repent to others. One can be liberated from the fall by confessing the previous fall in one's own mind, restraining oneself in the future, regretting the past, and vowing not to do it again in the future. If it is a transgression that should be repented, then it must be remedied by confessing and repenting to others. A transgression that should be restrained is called a mental transgression that belongs to the category of transgressions that should be repented, such as mental activity for the purpose of engaging in impure conduct. A transgression that should be repented is any transgression of body and speech as previously described. The ritual for confessing and repenting of a transgression that should be repented is that a bhikshu should not conceal a transgression, that is, for any transgression of a transgression that results in defeat that should be repented, even if there is only a single thought of concealment in his mind, he should not conceal it, but should immediately take off his two shoes and in front of a bhikshu who is fully ordained, naturally abiding, of the same view, dwelling within the boundary, and different from the fallen one in name and lineage...

While seated, with palms joined, one can immediately confess and repent by reciting the category and name of the transgression committed. The mantra for that is: "Venerable ones, please listen. I, a monk named so-and-so, have committed a transgression from the category that leads to defeat, a combination of actions called so-and-so. I, a monk named so-and-so, confess, do not conceal, and repent of that transgression before the venerable ones. By confessing and repenting, I will abide in happiness. If I do not confess and repent, it will not be so." Repeat this three times. The listener says, "Do you see the transgression?" The confessor says, "I see it." The listener says, "Will you refrain from now on?" The confessor says, "I will refrain." Repeat this three times. After that, the listener says, "This is the means." The confessor says, "Excellent." In this way, one is freed from the transgression. At that moment, if there is no one to whom one can confess and repent, there is no fault of concealment until dawn. As long as one has not found someone to whom one can confess and repent, even if dawn arrives, there is no fault of concealment for not confessing and repenting. If there is no one to whom one can confess and repent, and dawn arrives, as long as one has not found someone to whom one can confess and repent, there is no fault of concealment for not having the intention to confess and repent. Even if there is someone to whom one can confess and repent, but due to some reason, one does not have the opportunity to go there, or one has gone from that place to another, during that time, there is no fault of concealment for not having the intention to confess and repent. Even if there is someone to whom one can confess and repent, but the transgression occurred and one thinks, "If I go to him and do not speak, I fear it will become a fault of concealment," therefore, due to this reason, one does not go there, or one goes to another place and does not speak, there is also no fault of concealment. In any case, until the conditions are ripe, not going to him, or going to another place, or not confessing before dawn, and generating the intention to conceal, are all misdeeds. The person to whom one can confess and repent is a fully ordained monk.
