Because it can correctly collect, therefore, when correctly collecting the Vinaya Pitaka, in order to avoid future people without the qualities of hearing, thinking, and meditating from adding or slandering, and in order to benefit those listeners who wish to understand the meaning in a brief expression, the precepts are summarized in three ways: general summary, actual summary, and intermediate summary. Among them, the general summary is to summarize the general meaning into verses, for example, when narrating the chapter on offenses, at the beginning of each of the nine verses that appear in sequence, a verse called "general summary" is used to summarize the general meaning of all the verses, and so on. The actual summary is to summarize the actual meaning into verses, for example, the actual meaning of the four laws that lead to defeat is summarized by a verse called "summary", and the actual meaning of the thirteen Sanghavasesa laws is summarized by a verse called "summary", and so on. The intermediate summary is to summarize the meaning of the branches into verses, for example, the actual meaning of the thirty Nissaggiya Pacittiya laws is summarized by one summary verse, and then when separately establishing these offenses, for the meaning of those branch sentences that unfold in the chapters, they are summarized by a verse called "intermediate summary", and so on. Therefore, the mention of the word "summary" here refers to the summary of the actual meaning of the four laws that lead to defeat. Unchaste conduct and stealing, one should not kill, and accompanied by false speech, these four laws are declared here. For the word "should not", now located in the middle, it should be connected up and down, that is, one should not engage in unchaste conduct, one should not steal, one should not kill, this "should not" should also be accompanied by false speech, that is, one should not speak false speech, these four laws are what the Blessed One declared in the context of narrating what leads to defeat. Venerables, these four laws that lead to defeat arise from the Pratimoksha Sutra that is recited twice a month, this is what leads to defeat.

This is the explanation of the transmission of this recitation. The term "defeating dharma" refers to the fault of allowing others to be victorious, which is defeat. Because it leads to defeat, it is called "defeating dharma," which is a downfall. It is called "dharma" because it possesses the characteristic of being unbearable. The term "these four" refers to the defeating dharma of engaging in impure conduct, the defeating dharma of taking what is not given, the defeating dharma of killing, and the defeating dharma of lying. The statement "reciting the Pratimoksha Sutra every half month comes from the recitation" means that the Vinaya Pitaka among the three pitakas is not written down, and therefore is not manifest to everyone. If someone wonders, how do we know about the defeating offenses from reciting the Pratimoksha? Therefore, it is said that during the recitation of the Pratimoksha every half month, it comes from the recitation of the Vinaya holders. Now, in order to benefit future beings with dull faculties who cannot grasp the meaning of the words, the Bhagavan has allowed the Vinaya Pitaka to be correctly compiled. Therefore, these secret activities of the Vinaya Pitaka should not be heard by those who have not taken full ordination. At that time, after the Bhagavan attained complete enlightenment and obtained a retinue of Shravakas, for twelve years, the Sangha of Shravakas of the Bhagavan was without faults and without blemishes. The Bhagavan also recited the Pratimoksha Sutra for the Shravakas in a very concise manner, saying: Cease from all evil; Perform all good; Subdue your own mind; This is the teaching of the Buddhas. Good is the discipline of the body; Good is the discipline of speech; Good is the discipline of the mind; Discipline in all things is good; The Bhikshu who is disciplined in everything; Is completely liberated from all suffering. Guard your speech and restrain your mind; Do not commit any evil with your body; If you purify these three paths of action; You will attain the path spoken by the sages. Because he taught in this way, no precepts were established for the Shravakas in the Vinaya. When the thirteenth year arrived, the Buddha Bhagavan was in a certain place...
