These are the actual offenses of association. Then, the ultimate abandonment should be understood as the basis of downfall. There is no downfall if it is not one's own, not a bowl, non-existent, blessed, not having undergone ten days, and the dawn of the eleventh day has not risen. For the one who has gone forth, it is definitely determined that it is the abandonment itself, so there is no downfall in holding it. There is no downfall in holding the bowl with the intention of making it smaller or completely replacing it with a medicine bowl. There is no offense in having only one small bowl. There is no downfall for the beginner, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by feelings. What should be learned is that a bhikshu should not rely on all the ways that lead to the abandonment of holding a bowl in all places and at all times. The remedy is the same as before. The abandonment of holding a bowl, the twenty-first, has been explained. The basis for the abandonment of seeking a bowl is: The Buddha Bhagavan was residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there was a boy who sold incense, and he found a bowl that was very clear, well-shaped, and suitable for use. A mendicant, having put on his lower garment in the morning, took his bowl and Dharma robes and entered Shravasti for alms. After he had finished begging for alms and went to the street, the boy who sold incense saw him and said: Venerable, I have found a bowl that is very clear, well-shaped, and suitable for use. If you wish, please smell it. O good-faced one, I have a bowl. Venerable, if any other bhikshu needs a bowl, please give it to him. It should be given. Then that mendicant, having begged for alms in Shravasti, went to Jeta Grove. When he had finished eating and was washing his bowl, he said to the bhikshus: O you who have life, on a certain street there is a boy who sells incense, and he has found a bowl that is very clear, well-shaped, and suitable for use. Whoever among you wants a bowl, go and get it. He and Ha

Not far away, Nanda lived there, and when he heard it, he thought: If some of those with black bowls hear it and then run away, that would be bad, they would be scolded. So he said to him: Worthy one, you have eaten the food given by faith, and there is nothing else but talk of bowls and talk of robes. He thought: If all the desire-possessors in the world are like Nanda, if he also scolds me for a while, if a monastic elder hears it, then he will scold me more widely. So he sat there without saying a word. Nanda rebuked him and said: Venerable one, your preceptor and I are friends, therefore I rebuke you, do not scold me. Elder, if I also speak, please rebuke me as well. Venerable one, I am only slightly restless, is that bowl not a bowl? Elder, I was not going to speak in the first place. Venerable one, although that is so, but speak a little, Elder, in such and such a street, there is a incense-selling boy who found a very clean, well-shaped, usable bowl. He said: If there are any monks who need a bowl, please give it away. That's all, that's just a little restless. Then, Nanda put on his robes, quickened his pace and walked away. The incense-selling boy saw him coming from afar, quickening his pace, and he thought: This ragged monk is coming like this, he will steal my bowl. So he took the bowl and put it under the fence to hide it. When Nanda saw him hiding it, he said: Good man, is this bowl made of reeds? Why are you hiding it? So he reached out to him, took the bowl and said: Good man, may this alms be the ornament of your mind, the instrument of your mind, the collection of yoga, the attainment of the highest meaning, and become a vessel among gods and men.

Those merchants live by seeking profit, so they will not give it away here without charge, but give it for money. O good-looking one, are you selling the bowl of a practitioner? He also spoke a verse: If a person, with an earthen vessel, obtains a golden vessel, why should he grieve? I see that he is not deceived. O noble one, you have said much, but still you will not give it away without charge. Nede said: Your excessive attachment to the bowl will cause you to be born among the foxes of the hungry ghosts. As he was scolding him in this way, a householder came to that side and said: O noble one, I prostrate! Venerable Nede, I prostrate! Nede said: O good-looking one, what are you doing with this dry hand of yours? O noble one, whatever the venerable Nede has commanded me, I have not failed to do. Buy this bowl and give it to me! That householder said to the incense-selling boy: O good-looking one, how much is this bowl? This much and this much. I will give it to you. The incense-selling boy gave the bowl to that householder, and that householder also offered it to Nede. Nede said: Ah, Rogga, may this generosity become the ornament of your mind, the equipment of your mind, the gathering of yoga, the attainment of the supreme meaning, and may you become a vessel among gods and humans! After that householder left, Nede said to the incense-selling boy: Miser, do you know that you cannot make Nede pay the price of the bowl? Your excessive attachment to the bowl will cause you to be born among the sparrows of the hungry ghosts. O noble one, how much should I pay? You have obtained the bowl, and I have also obtained the price, let's go! Nede again took the bowl and went to the temple, and he showed the bowl to the monks and said: O you who have life, look! What is my bowl like? A young man said: Venerable, do you not have another bowl? I do. Then, is it proper for the Venerable to have a bowl and possess it, and still seek another bowl? In the throats of enemies
