Thinking, 'Who could have given birth to such a one?' he endured carrying the bright alms bowl under his armpit to enjoy it. He went to those gatherings, and after arriving, he spoke words of generosity to one of the gatherings, ensuring that his mind would develop great faith. That person's mind developed faith, and he said, 'You have come for the sake of the noble ones.' Nanda replied, 'Good sir, I need an alms bowl.' 'Noble one, I do not have an alms bowl. If it can be obtained with money, I will pay and offer it.' Nanda took out the alms bowl from under his armpit, showed it to him, and said, 'Good sir, this alms bowl was also obtained with money.' 'Noble one, how much is this worth?' 'Sixty karshapanas.' 'I am willing to offer sixty karshapanas for this.' 'Good sir, may those Aroga birds belong to you. May this generosity enable you to obtain the adornment of the mind, the equipment of the mind, the assembly of yoga, and the supreme meaning, and may you become a vessel among gods and humans.' In this way, he made each of the sixty gatherings contribute sixty karshapanas and then left. All those gatherings gathered together, and then one of the gatherings said, 'Knowledgeable ones, I have offered sixty karshapanas as the value of the alms bowl to the monk Nanda, who has renounced from the Shakya clan, who possesses the reasoning of teaching the Dharma and the courage of liberation. Please rejoice!' Another person said, 'I have also offered.' Yet another person said, 'I have also given.' In this way, everyone said, 'I have also given, I have also given.' After saying this, they began to look at each other. 'Knowledgeable ones, does one monk need an alms bowl?' They asked a monk, 'Noble one, does one monk need an alms bowl?' That person said, 'Good sirs, only one is needed.' They began to slander, saying, 'The renunciates of the Shakya clan are those who are overcome by the desire for gain.' This was just a temporary occurrence, and the Blessed One Buddha did not temporarily establish a basis for training in discipline. The place was Shravasti (Jetavana, a city in northern India around the 6th century BCE), the person was Nanda, and the affliction was desire.

So, the fault is demanding the value of the alms bowl. The origin of this precept is that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti (Śrāvastī, around 6th century BCE). At that time, the group of six monks would store all the alms bowls they obtained and use them themselves, not giving them to other monks. Therefore, the monks with few desires rebuked them, saying, 'Why do the monks store all the alms bowls they obtain and use them themselves, not giving them to other monks?' They engaged in pointing fingers, mocking, and criticizing. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan. Then, the Bhagavan, because of this event, this origin, and this situation, convened the monastic community of monks, rebuked the group of six monks, scolded them in various ways, and fully saw the ten benefits of establishing precepts. Therefore, my Shravaka disciples should recite and study the basis of discipline in this way: 'A monk should keep an extra alms bowl for ten days. If he keeps it beyond that limit, he commits a Nissaggiya Pacittiya.' Thus, the precept was established. The place was Shravasti (Śrāvastī, around 6th century BCE), the people were the group of six monks, the affliction was wanting to do things that do not conform to the behavior of a Shramana, and the fault was keeping an extra alms bowl for more than ten days. Among these, 'monk' refers to the one who upholds this Dharma. 'Extra alms bowl' refers to the bowl that is more than what is to be blessed. 'Within ten days' refers to the limit of ten days and nights. 'Should keep' means should possess. 'If he keeps it beyond that limit' means if he keeps it beyond that limit. 'Commits a Nissaggiya Pacittiya' means after discarding that object, one should confess the sin of Nissaggiya Pacittiya. Therefore, it is said 'Commits a Nissaggiya Pacittiya.' So, how does one incur a transgression? Here also, one should understand the characteristics of this precept through the main action, the preparatory action, the preparatory action of the preparatory action to determine the transgression, as well as the absence of transgression, what should be learned, and the remedial measures. Among these, the characteristic of the Nissaggiya of keeping an alms bowl is entirely the same as the characteristic of the Nissaggiya of keeping clothes that was previously explained, the difference being that previously it was clothes.
