Those who perform miracles of raining and emitting lightning, and whoever makes offerings to them, those offerings will become extremely fruitful, extremely beneficial, extremely bright, and extremely prosperous. When the merchants from the north heard this, they said, "Wise ones, let us go to the central region! There we can also obtain many profits, and we will also make offerings to the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha." So those merchants from the north, carrying their goods, set out for the central region and eventually arrived in Shravasti (Mnyan yod). In Shravasti, there was a wise astrologer who heard that some like-minded merchants had come from the north. He thought, "I will go and see what the situation is, perhaps I can get some benefit there." So he observed a little and also speculated a little. Then he went and told the caravan leader his name and family, saying, "So-and-so by name, you have come well! You have come well! Your mother is named so-and-so, your father is named so-and-so, your goods are this much. After many days, your mouth will be ruined, and you will gain this much profit." The caravan leader thought, "Among the Blessed One's Shravaka disciples, perhaps one of those who are said to be able to shine, manifest, rain, and perform miracles of lightning is one of these people." So out of faith, he filled a bowl with fruits from the northern forest and gave it to him, and also gave him a garment that looked like the color of orpiment insects. That wise man took it and put it on, and went to those who practiced like Brahma. When they saw him, they said, "Wise one, whom have you deceived? From what deception have you escaped?" He said, "Some like-minded merchants have come from the north, and there I told the caravan leader his name and family, and so out of faith, he was controlled by faith." Those people said, "Wise one, we, the practitioners of the Shakya clan, always think that you people, apart from weavers, rosary makers, and oil sellers, do not have faith in other important people, this is what we have always criticized. You are wearing this garment to see the Shakya...

Destroy the hearts of those heretical ascetics! After saying this, the wise one put on that garment and went to Jeta Grove. The conduct of the Six Groups was: "Here, we shall also teach the Dharma to the Brahmins and householders who come here. We shall also subdue the opponents. We shall also proclaim our own fame." Since none of the Six Groups would leave the gate of Jeta Grove empty, Nanda, wandering and staying at the gate of Jeta Grove, saw that wise one from afar. Then Nanda thought: "This evil naked ascetic has come wearing a fine garment. If I do not snatch it away, I shall not be called Nanda." So, he said to him: "Wise one, you are a naked ascetic, wearing such a garment, have you returned to the lay life?" "I have not returned to the lay life. In this way, a merchant with common interests came from the north, and there I told the leader my name and lineage, and he, out of faith, gave it to me as an offering of faith." "How bad, how bad! You practice immoral conduct in your old age. Come here, sit down, and I will teach you the Dharma." As the wise one sat down in front of Nanda, Nanda was delighted, and being delighted, he began to praise generosity. The conduct of the Six Groups was: "If they speak of morality, the listeners will think, 'We shall be born as gods.' If they speak of generosity, the listeners will think, 'We shall also cut off our own flesh and give it away.' If they speak of the lower realms, the listeners will think, 'We shall be born in the lower realms.'" Therefore, Nanda said to the wise one: "The teacher of the wise one is inclined to evil. If he desired good, he would have given you clothes worth a million, and food with a hundred flavors, and a five-hundred-eyed mansion, but he did not give it. Our teacher is inclined to good, so he gave us clothes worth a million, and food with eight flavors, and a five-hundred-eyed mansion. If you

If you go begging wearing such a garment, Brahmins and faithful householders will think, 'This knowledgeable person is behaving immorally.' As a result, you will not even be able to beg. Give me your garment, and I will give you another garment. When I go begging wearing this garment, Brahmins and faithful householders will see me and say, 'How did the venerable Nanda get such a garment?' Then I can say to them, 'It was given to me by so-and-so, a knowledgeable person.' In this way, they will think that this knowledgeable person is faithful, and when you go begging to them, they will fill your bowl with wine and malt liquor. He said, 'Venerable Nanda!' Nanda said, 'Knowledgeable person, your practices that are similar to Brahma are immoral, and after hearing those words, you will come back to snatch it back. There is such a thing.' Venerable Nanda, is this garment of mine owned by those who practice similarly to Brahma? This garment is owned by me alone, please take it, and I will not snatch it back.' Nanda took that garment and gave him another rough garment, and that knowledgeable person, wearing that rough garment, went back to those who practiced similarly to Brahma. When they saw him, they said, 'Knowledgeable person, where did you get this tattered garment again?' He said, 'This was obtained from someone else.' 'How did it happen?' 'I gave that garment to the venerable Nanda, and he also gave me this garment.' They scolded him and said, 'Knowledgeable person, the Shakyaputra ascetics are not even as good as living vultures.' How are the six groups not like others, how is Nanda not like other six groups. If you had given it to another elder Bhikshu, we would also rejoice, but you gave it to Nanda, who wants to take our blood in exchange for goods. If he comes with the garment, that would be good. If he does not come with it, we
