If there is further contact, then in any case, there will only be downfall. Therefore, when a bhikṣu obtains the value of an unlawful garment, he should make one of these three lawful things, and for that object, he should generate a mind of not considering it as his own, he should train in this way. Those three lawful things also do not depend on causes other than not possessing things related to the Dharma, and the so-called things related to the Dharma are one's own alms bowl, Dharma garment, water filter or bowl, belt, or any of the bhikṣu's living utensils, as well as the causes of illness and medical supplies, etc. The so-called not depending on causes other than not possessing those things means that if one clearly possesses things related to the Dharma, it is also not permissible to make that unlawful object lawful; or if one does not possess things related to the Dharma, and in order to find them, one makes that object lawful for other things that are not related to the Dharma, apart from that cause, it is also not permissible. Therefore, even if one has already made those three lawful treatments that do not depend on causes other than not possessing things related to the Dharma, if that bhikṣu touches it or causes it to be touched, it will become a saṃghāvaśeṣa. Therefore, one should train not to do such unlawful things. If a bhikṣu has a reason to go elsewhere from the monastery, he should hide the property and gold of the saṃgha or stūpa and then leave. If there is no monastery manager or layperson, or no faithful layperson, or no śrāmaṇera, then the bhikṣu himself should hide it. If the hiding place requires digging a hole, if there is no monastery manager or layperson, or no faithful layperson, or no śrāmaṇera, then the bhikṣu himself should dig it. When there is no fear from that hiding place, it should be taken out by the monastery manager and others of that kind and offered to the saṃgha. One should train not to use what is allowed in times of poverty in times of ease. A bhikṣu, in order to nourish his own body, can use the object that has been made lawful to make food ingredients, he should train in this way. It is also permissible to take a karṣāpaṇa from the donor, from the hand of the person who makes it lawful, in order to distribute goods to the person who makes the food, he should train in this way.

For those who live by begging, provisions for the road can be made from precious items and below, and one should learn in this way. Here, the scripture is because the monks did not know what provisions for the road were, so the Blessed One taught: The provisions for the road for monks are five kinds of food, five kinds of things considered as food, five kinds of precious jewels, and five kinds of things considered as precious jewels. What are the five kinds of food? Rice, hot porridge, meat, fish meat, and oil cakes. What are the five kinds of things considered as food? Millet, barnyard millet, soybeans, barley, and buckwheat. What are the five kinds of precious jewels? Gold, silver, beryl, crystal, and pearl. What are the five kinds of things considered as precious jewels? Tin, copper, lead, blue vitriol, and iron. Thus it was said. A monk should place a fire mirror nearby for the purpose of making fire. It should not be hidden away. One should not rely on taking what is not given. After he makes fire with it, the fire should also be given to those who take what is not given. For the purpose of obtaining water, a water mirror should be placed nearby. The rituals for its protection and so on are also as before. In order to prevent the fault of mixing, implements are permitted, and one should not mix the ownership of precious jewels within them, so it is said. Pots and other cooking utensils are implements, and these are permitted. One should learn that the ownership of precious jewels should not be mixed into the scope of this permission. Also, here in the scripture, the Blessed One taught in the Miscellaneous Matters: Therefore, monks should carry pots, needles, medicine bowls, and drinking vessels, which is permitted. A monk should not carry pots and other things made of gold, silver, beryl, or crystal, so it was said. In the Vinaya Matters, the Blessed One also said: One should carry a tobacco medicine box. It was asked, what should one carry? The Blessed One taught: Except for attendants, one should not carry things made of precious jewels. One should carry a snuff bottle, a drinking vessel, a needle, a belt, an eye medicine box, a medicine bowl, a footstool, a small bed, and a medicine tube. The bellows of an ironworker...
