Having gathered all those residing in Na Ciang into the house of the local official, the village chief Topknot Jewel, according to what he had reported, and the Blessed One, according to what he had taught, repeated all of that to the monks, and taught thus: "Monks, just as the village chief Topknot Jewel said in the presence of the king and others, monks should not have obvious marks, and the renunciates of the Shakya clan should not possess gold. Whoever allows obvious marks and possesses gold, then without a doubt, that person also allows the enjoyment of the five desirable qualities." He seized upon this point, spoke a very vast lion's roar, and truly proclaimed a lion's roar within the assembly. "Monks, I also say this to the monks, monks should not have obvious marks, and the renunciates of the Shakya clan should not possess gold. Whoever allows obvious marks and possesses gold, that is not the Dharma of a renunciate, that is not the Dharma of the Shakya clan," he said. "Monks, therefore, from now on, those of you who want wood should seek wood; those who want grass should seek grass; those who want vehicle work should do vehicle work; those who want laborers should seek laborers," he said. Do not say in any way to possess gold. This is just something that has happened temporarily, and the Buddha, the Blessed One, will not temporarily establish the basis for the training of the hearers in order to tame them. The place is Rajagriha. The people are all the renunciates of the Shakya clan. There are no afflictions or faults. The basis for the enactment of the precepts is that the Buddha, the Blessed One, was residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. At that time, the group of six monks were taking gold and silver with their own hands, causing others to take it, making one pile, making two piles, placing it on beds, small beds, and even smaller beds. Others who were powerful, knowledgeable, and renunciates of the Shakya clan, neither regressed, nor abandoned, nor individually abandoned, like this, taking gold and silver with their own hands, causing others to take it, making one pile.

They also do. They make two piles. They make beds, small beds, and tiny small beds. Brahmins and householders also take gold and silver with their own hands. They cause (others) to take it. They make one pile. They make two piles. They make beds, small beds, and tiny small beds. Wise people would think, what is the difference between the actions of these Shākya's sons, the practitioners, and the Brahmins and householders? What is the difference in their thoughts? What is the difference in their actions? Who would think of giving alms to these bald practitioners? They would scold, ridicule, and speak ill of them. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Thereafter, the Blessed One, because of this event, this origin, this occasion, convened the monastic community of monks, rebuked the group of six monks, scolded them in various ways, and fully saw the ten benefits of establishing precepts. Therefore, my hearers should declare the root of learning the Vinaya as follows: If any monk personally accepts gold and silver, or causes others to accept it, he commits a Nissaggiya Pācittiya. The place was Shravasti (Mnyan yod). The persons were the group of six monks. The affliction was the desire to act in a way that is not like a practitioner. The offense is personally accepting gold and silver, and causing others to accept it. Among them, the so-called "any monk" refers to the group of six monks or others like them. The so-called "with one's own hand" refers to with one's own hand. The so-called "gold and silver" refers to gold and silver. The so-called "accepting" refers to oneself personally. The so-called "causing others to accept" refers to through others. The so-called "Nissaggiya Pācittiya" means that the object must be abandoned, and the offense of Nissaggiya Pācittiya must be confessed. Therefore, it is said to be a Nissaggiya Pācittiya. So, how does an offense occur? Here, the characteristics of this are to be understood through the main action, the preparatory action, the preparatory action of the preparatory action to establish the offense, as well as the absence of offense, what should be learned, and the remedies. Among them, here, the establishment of the offense of the main action is: a monk accepts precious jewels, gems, pearls, beryl, conch shells, stone marrow, coral, goose silver, gold, the essence of stones, and impurities.
