between. Wise ones, if monks can have obvious signs and the practitioners of the sons of Shakya can possess gold, or monks cannot have obvious signs and the practitioners of the sons of Shakya cannot possess gold, after reporting this, some will say this, monks can have obvious signs, and the practitioners of the sons of Shakya can possess gold. Some will say this, monks cannot have obvious signs, and the practitioners of the sons of Shakya cannot possess gold, after reporting this, virtuous ones, for those who say that monks can have obvious signs and the practitioners of the sons of Shakya can possess gold, virtuous ones, if those who report in that way explain it in that way, they will not slander the Blessed One, nor will they go too far, and they are speaking in accordance with what the Blessed One said, they are speakers of the Dharma, they are explaining the Dharma in accordance with the meaning of the Dharma, for those who speak in accordance with what was said, is there not some Dharma that can be blamed because it agrees with the Dharma of others? The Blessed One said: Village chief, if someone says that monks can have obvious signs and the practitioners of the sons of Shakya can possess gold, if they explain it in that way, then they are slandering me and going too far, and they are not appearing in accordance with what I said, they are not speakers of the Dharma, they are not explaining the Dharma in accordance with the meaning of the Dharma, and they are not speaking in accordance with what was said, for those people, because they agree with the Dharma of others, there will be very many Dharmas that can be blamed. Why is that? Village chief, monks cannot have obvious signs, and the practitioners of the sons of Shakya cannot possess gold. If someone has obvious signs and possesses gold, that is not the Dharma of a practitioner, nor is it the Dharma of the sons of Shakya. Village chief, for that meaning, I will say to you two or three times, monks

There should be no marks, and the renunciates who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold. Whoever has marks and possesses gold, that is not the Dharma of a renunciate, and that is not the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya. For what reason did the Blessed One say to the monks, "Monks, there should be no marks, and the renunciates who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold. Whoever has marks and possesses gold, that is not the Dharma of a renunciate, and that is not the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya"? How wonderful it is that the Blessed One has spoken so well! For what reason did the Blessed One say to the monks, "Village head, I will speak to you two or three times for that very reason: Monks, there should be no marks, and the renunciates who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold. Whoever has marks and possesses gold, that is not the Dharma of a renunciate, and that is not the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya"? The Blessed One's teachings are so vast and good! Reverend, I also think this: Monks should not have marks, and the renunciates who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold. Whoever has marks and possesses gold, then the five desirable qualities are also permissible for them. Village head, it is just so. It is just so. Monks should not have marks, and the renunciates who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold. Whoever has marks and possesses gold, that is not the Dharma of a renunciate, and that is not the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya. Then, the village head Tsugna Norbu was very pleased and rejoiced at the words spoken by the Blessed One, and then bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda, who was standing beside the Blessed One, holding a fan and fanning the Blessed One, "How many monks rely on the place of Kalanda in the Light Garden Grove?"
