If entrusted to Gautama's dry-nurse, Gautama's dry-nurse is a Vinaya holder, and the retinue also possesses Vinaya holders, so he will think, 'This is a downfall, this is not a downfall,' and when thinking like this, time will be delayed. The great Prajāpatī Gautami is a renunciate, and the retinue also possesses renunciation, so when he places his mind in one-pointedness, spinning wool will not be hindered. Thinking, 'I will entrust the wool to him to spin,' while he is thinking like that, the great Prajāpatī Gautami came to the place where the Blessed One was spinning wool, and at that time, the venerable Ananda saw her from afar and said: 'Gautami, the Blessed One's wish is fulfilled with a mind endowed with morality, and that is also because of the purity of morality.' That was well said, now I only thought, 'If the great Prajāpatī Gautami came, how wonderful it would be,' and when that thought arose, you also came here. I have obtained a little wool, please spin it for me and give it to me.' The venerable one, I prostrate at the feet of the Blessed One and then return, send two nuns and give the wool to their hands. Ananda tightly bound the wool into two bundles with spinning thread and placed them behind the door bolt. Then the great Prajāpatī Gautami prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One, entered the summer retreat, and then sent two nuns to him, instructing them: 'Go to the venerable Ananda and ask him to send the wool.' The two of them went there and said: 'Venerable one, Gautami sends word, please send the wool.' Ananda said to the two of them: 'There are two bundles behind the door bolt, take them and go.' Saying this, the small one lifted one and placed it on the other's head, and one on the other's waist. The two of them said, "The head is about to break, the waist is about to break!" Saying this, they carried it out of the summer house, placed it on the ground, and then collapsed on the bed and sat down. The nuns said to the two of them, "Holy mothers, are you pledges of young women?" The two of them said, "Whoever among you is strong, lift this!" They began to lift it, but they couldn't even move it, so they said, "Holy mothers, have heavy stones been placed inside?" They unwrapped the two bundles, and before long, the wool scattered and became a huge pile. The nuns clapped their hands and said, "The venerable Kātyāyana said that even a little wool is like this, what would it be like if there were more?" Mahā-prajāpatī Gautami said, "Sisters, if they are shaven-headed and have patched armpits, what is there to laugh at?" The venerable Kātyāyana's brother said that even a little wool is like this, what would it be like if there were more? Mahā-prajāpatī Gautami said, "Sisters, they are those who wander everywhere, they defile the Blessed One's teachings, so they will fall. Sisters, the Blessed One said that these two are great men, who do not take on burdens that have not been taken on, and who complete burdens that have been taken on. Because this burden has been taken on, it must be completed. Whichever of you likes to spin how much, take it to that person to spin." They were delayed for a long time, and Kātyāyana thought, "They are keeping the wool as payment for spinning. I have done something bad, I think my wool is like being ruined by rain and placed on a hillside." Two nuns spun some wool, brought it, and said, "Venerable Kātyāyana, if you need the wool, where should we put it?"
