One should send a messenger, saying, "Do not waste your wealth." This is the initial action and ritual. After that, for a bhikkhu to obtain robes, is it permissible to solicit more than three times, or to sit in silence more than three times? If the solicitor does not promise to help the donor collect their mind, and takes the robe at that time, then it constitutes the basis for the pārājika of soliciting. There is no fault if the donor, messenger, and solicitor are all human and householders. There is no fault if these three are relatives or non-relatives. There is no fault if these three are male or female. There is no fault if the soliciting and sitting nearby are done in order or out of order. The actors here are the donor, messenger, and solicitor, all three being human and householders, and the soliciting and sitting exceeding the limit, and not promising to help collect the mind of giving. Here, five branches will cause the basis of the offense: the donor, messenger, and solicitor are all human; abandoning what is not suitable as the price of the robe; soliciting and sitting exceeding the limit; not promising to help collect the mind of giving; and taking the robe. If these branches are not complete, then there is fault accordingly. Among them, mentioning that the donor, messenger, and solicitor are all human and householders is because the opposite is said to be a misdeed. Mentioning abandoning what is not suitable as the price of the robe is also because the opposite is said to be a misdeed. Here, some say this: what has not been made suitable as the price of the robe, such as gold, should be applied by this very reasoning. If gold and the like have been made suitable as the price of the robe, then there is no fault even if it is taken. As the Blessed One said, "It should be taken, and having taken it, one should trust and hold onto that very donor." That is what they say. I say this: if the donor gives with the intention of the price of the robe, and the bhikkhu also needs the robe
