At that time, the monks requested the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, because of this event, this origin, this circumstance, convened the Sangha of monks, rebuked Nanda, scolded him in various ways, and fully saw the ten benefits of establishing precepts. My Shravaka disciples should recite and study the basis of the precepts as follows: If, for the sake of a monk, a householder or the wife of a householder who is not a relative accumulates the value of cloth, thinking: I will use these values of cloth to buy this or that kind of cloth, and when a monk named so-and-so comes, I will sew suitable clothes for him. If that monk has not been informed beforehand, but some discriminations arise, in order to obtain good things, he goes to that householder or the wife of a householder who is not a relative, and says this: Venerable one, with the value of the cloth that you have accumulated for me, please use those values of cloth to buy this or that kind of cloth for me, and sew suitable clothes for me. If the clothes are made, it is a Nissaggiya Pacittiya offense. The precept is established in this way. The place is Shravasti, the person is Nanda, the defilements are desire and anger, and the fault is begging for accumulated things. Among them, for the sake of a monk, it refers to the son of the Shakya clan, Nanda, or anyone else like him. Householder or mother, refers to a man. The wife of a householder, refers to a woman. Non-relative, refers to the grandmother, grandfather, and relatives up to the seventh generation, beyond the seventh generation they are not relatives. The value of cloth, refers to gold or silver. Accumulating, refers to preparing. I with these values of cloth, refers to the accumulated gold or silver, etc. This or that kind of cloth, refers to any of the seven kinds of cloth, namely cotton cloth, linen cloth, coarse wool cloth, fine wool cloth, cotton-wool mixed cloth, kudzu cloth, and silk. Buying, refers to having bought. When a monk named so-and-so comes, refers to the son of the Shakya clan, Nanda, or anyone else like him. For him, clothes

“Thinking it suitable to wear at the right time” is called being able to enjoy. Then, if that monk was not previously invited, it is called not having been invited as a guest before. “Some discriminations arise,” is called some service arises. “For the sake of wanting good,” is called for the sake of wanting the best and most excellent. “Having gone to a householder or the householder's wife who is not a relative,” is called having gone to their presence. “Saying this: ‘O venerable one, for my sake, with the price of the clothes that have been accumulated, O venerable one, buy such and such a garment,’” is called buying one. “'Please properly clothe me with a suitable garment at the right time,' having said thus,” is called having said those words of accumulating begging. “If the garment is completed,” is called if the garment is obtained. “It is an expiatory offense of relinquishment,” is called having relinquished that object, one must confess the expiatory offense of relinquishment. Therefore, it is said to be an expiatory offense of relinquishment. Then, how does the offense occur? Here also, one should understand the characteristics of this through the main basis, the preparation, the establishment of the offense through the action of the preparation, as well as the absence of offense, what should be learned, and the remedies. Now, this offense of accumulating begging is a detailed classification of the previously explained relinquishment of begging, therefore, the main basis, the preparation, the establishment of the offense through the action of the preparation, as well as the absence of offense, what should be learned, and the characteristics of the remedies of this relinquishment of accumulating begging, should be understood just as they were explained in the context of the previous relinquishment of begging. A slight difference of it will be stated, therefore, it is said, “Knowing that the accumulation has not been given is the same as not having accumulated.” Knowing that the accumulation has not been given is said to be in the context of this very relinquishment of accumulating begging, when the patron has accumulated clothes for the monk, and the monk has not been given them, and that monk is known by anyone. “It is the same as not having accumulated,” not having accumulated is said to be in the context of the previously explained relinquishment of begging, when the patron has not accumulated to offer clothes to the monk. “The same,” is called accumulating.
