Thus it is said, venerable ones, that half of the winter months have passed. It should be said that half a month remains. If recited on the full moon day of the middle winter month, it should be said thus, venerable ones, that two months of winter have passed, with nothing remaining. Similarly, in the late winter season, there are also four times for reciting the Uposatha: the empty day of the middle winter month, the full moon day of the last winter month, the empty day of the last winter month, and the full moon day of the first spring month. Among these, if recited on the empty day of the middle winter month, it should be said thus, venerable ones, that half of the late winter season has passed. It should be said that one and a half months remain. If recited on the full moon day of the last winter month, it should be said thus, venerable ones, that one month of the late winter season has passed. It should be said that one month remains.

This is the mantra for reciting the Sutra of Liberation. For auspicious Uposatha and fasting to eliminate harm, etc., when not combined with the new moon, in addition to the previously mentioned mantras, the date of the waxing or waning moon of the first and second months should also be stated, how much has passed and how much remains. For example, "Venerable ones, the first day of the waning moon of the first month of Soga has passed. One month and twenty-nine days remain," and so on. Saying these is for being skilled in worldly terminology, keeping the past time in mind, being weary of samsara, striving for virtue, and for fully understanding the Uposatha day. Calculating these is done by the abbot of the Sangha, who counts each month by stringing fifteen bamboo sticks on a thread, straightening one each day, and consulting the Vinaya master, announcing each day to the Sangha. The omission of intercalary months is done by following the king's system. The constellations are known by following the system of the astrologer. "Venerable ones, aging and death will manifest, and the Teacher's doctrine will also perish, therefore, venerable ones should diligently engage in yoga," this statement also shows that one should be weary of samsara and strive for virtue. So, here, for the reason of being weary of samsara and striving for virtue, why is it said that aging and death will manifest, and the Teacher's doctrine will perish? This is to show that the main part of the cause of celibacy is completely decayed. Thus, celibacy is accomplished in two ways: body and place. Among them, in terms of the body, celibacy is accomplished through the ability to endure physical exertion and through continuity. To show that these are completely decayed, it is said that aging and death will manifest. Because physical exertion cannot be endured and there is interruption, not practicing celibacy will completely decay, this is in corresponding order. Why are other limbs of existence and faults such as sorrow not mentioned, but only aging and death mentioned?
