The next day, Near-Joy sent a young man to the forty monks of the city, saying: "Go and ask for the Dharma robes, and come back quickly!" Before the young man went, Near-Joy said: "You miser, will you manifest the exhaustion of defilements with such diligence?" Near-Joy himself went and knocked on the door of Pongsa's house with his heel, and Pongsa's house shook completely. They arose from their samadhi and said: "Venerable ones, the forty monks want to ask for the three Dharma robes, are you dwellers of the grave with hearts smaller than a small heart? Come quickly!" The Venerable Jeso came out of the forest. Come quickly, unload (the robes) right on the road! Those noble ones and Near-Joy said: "Venerable ones, we six groups of monks are like white crows, we should not sit like rats, but the elders should sit in turn." They went to the alley of the poor, opened their arms and sat down, and those people saw them and felt discouraged, saying: "Noble ones, has there been some fault?" Good-faced ones, a fault has occurred. What mistake have you made? Have you heard of the forty monks of the city, whom the Blessed One praised, honored, praised, and highly praised in every corner of the sutras? We have heard. They were robbed by robbers. They said: "Knowledgeable ones, pick up bows and arrows! Pick up shields and sticks! We are going to catch the robbers!" The six groups of monks said: "They have been robbed for a long time, and they have already robbed in other places." What should we do then? Give them clothes! They gave them new and old clothes. They said, "Knowledgeable ones, take up bows and arrows! Take up shields and clubs! We will go to capture the thieves." The Six Groups said, "They have been robbed for a long time and have already robbed in other places." "Then what should we do?" "Give them clothes!" They gave them clothes suitable for great people. The Six Groups found those clothes too heavy, so they entrusted them to the young men, saying, "Today, take these to the monastery." The young men took them and went to the monastery. Those people went to the palace of King Prasenajit of Kosala, laid them out, and sat down. King Prasenajit of Kosala saw them and was very pleased, saying, "Venerable ones, has some fault not occurred?" "God, a fault has occurred." "What fault? God, have you heard that the forty monks of the town, who were praised, honored, extolled, and highly praised by the Blessed One in various sutras, have been robbed by thieves?" The king commanded the army general Holy Born, saying, "Go and quickly bring the thieves and the stolen goods!" The Six Groups said, "God, they have been robbed for a long time and have already robbed in other places." "Then what should we do? Give the gods clothes!" The king gave each monk thirteen items. The Six Groups found those clothes too heavy, so they entrusted them to the young men, saying, "Today, take these to the monastery." The young men took them and went to the monastery.
