How can I not burn? Others renounce the world in order to abandon desire, but the venerable Nanda is only for the sake of increasing desire. What have I done? You have robbed a householder who came to visit the Jeta Grove of two pieces of cloth and ornaments, will that householder not scold you? Nanda said: This is because the gods in the world are givers, and the pretas are takers. Did he give you a bhṛṅgāra (Sanskrit: भृङ्गार, a water pot) filled with pills? If the householder cannot bear it, let a precept be established. Am I to ignore this? Then, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, bowed his head at the Blessed One's feet and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada said this to the Blessed One: Venerable ones, these noble ones ask for clothes from householders, or from servants of householders who are not relatives. Alas, for the sake of compassion, the Blessed One should establish some rules for the noble ones, so that the noble ones will no longer ask for clothes from householders, or from servants of householders who are not relatives, in order to remind them. The Blessed One did not say anything to the householder Anāthapiṇḍada, and remained silent. Then, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada, knowing that the Blessed One had remained silent, rose from his seat, bowed his head at the Blessed One's feet, and then departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, this cause, the Blessed One convened the Sangha of monks, rebuked Nanda, scolded him in various ways, and having observed the ten benefits of establishing a precept, he ordered the disciples who were hearers to recite the precept as follows: Furthermore, if any monk goes to a householder, or to the wife of a householder who is not a relative, and asks for clothes, it is an offense entailing expiation. The place was Śrāvastī, the person was Nanda, the afflictions were desire and anger, the offense was asking for clothes from a householder or the wife of a householder who is not a relative. Approval.

The basis of the story is that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, was residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti. Forty-seven monks from a village were traveling together, and when they wanted to go somewhere, they were robbed by thieves. They thought to themselves: The Bhagavan has established the basis of the training, that if any monk goes to the householder or the householder's wife who is not a relative to beg for clothes, he commits a Patayantika offense. We have no relatives here, but if we go to Shravasti, those who practice the same Brahmacharya as us will share their clothes with us. They said: Should we go naked? We should travel at night and hide in the dense forest during the day, and then set out again at night. So, they traveled at night to Jeta Grove. A monk who did not sleep in the upper and lower parts of the night, but practiced diligently, saw them and said: You naked people, this is not your dwelling place, nor is it a monastery, where do you come from? Venerable ones, we are not naked people. Then who are you? We are monks. Are there such monks? Those who have been robbed by thieves. What are your names? We are the forty monks living in the village. Venerable ones, welcome, welcome! Some of them gave them monastic robes, some gave them upper garments, some gave them lower garments, and some gave them cushions. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan taught: Therefore, except in special circumstances. What are the special circumstances? That is, the monk's clothes are robbed, lost, burned, blown away by the wind, or washed away by the water. That is the special circumstance. Then, the Bhagavan praised the desire to learn, respect learning, and reduce the items needed for learning, and also spoke to the monks in a similar, more important, and more Dharma-conforming manner.

We were told: Bhikshus, now, what was previously prescribed is now permitted. My Shravaka disciples should recite the root of learning in the Vinaya as follows: Furthermore, any Bhikshu who goes to a householder or the wife of a householder who is not a relative, and asks for clothes, except at a specific time, it is a Nishthana Patayantika. The specific time is: when a Bhikshu's clothes are robbed, lost, burned, blown away by the wind, or carried away by water, then that is the specific time. This was permitted by the Buddha. The place is Shravasti. The people are forty Brahmin Bhikshus living near the village. There are no afflictions or faults. Among them, "any Bhikshu" refers to Nanda or anyone else like that. "Householder" refers to a man. "The wife of a householder" refers to a woman. "Not a relative" means that the maternal grandmother, grandfather, and up to the seventh generation of cousins are relatives, and beyond that range they are not relatives. "Go to..." means to go before... "Clothes" refers to any of the seven types of clothes: wool, linen, fine linen, cotton wool, Dugula cloth, Kautamba cloth, and Nioca cloth. "Ask for" means to beg. "Except at a specific time" means to set a time. "Nishthana Patayantika" means to abandon the object and then confess the Patayantika. The specific time is: when a Bhikshu's clothes are robbed, this means that the Bhikshu's clothes are robbed by robbers or swindlers. Clothes are lost, this means that the Bhikshu's clothes are lost or misplaced. Clothes are burned, this means that the Bhikshu's clothes are burned by fire. Clothes are blown away by the wind, this means that the Bhikshu's clothes are blown away by the wind. Clothes are carried away by water, this means that the Bhikshu's clothes are carried away by water. "Then that is the specific time" means that for that root of learning, that is the permitted time. So, how is a Patayantika constituted? Here there is also the main action, the preparatory action, and the preparatory action of...
