Or there was nothing that was not completely given away. He has now also obtained a large piece of cloth, and he has given it to the nun Nega. Kasyapa, can monks take leftover cloth from nuns who are not relatives? Yes, venerable one. Kasyapa, a nun who is not a relative will not think, 'Are her five robes complete?' but will take everything that is obtained. But even if it is given to a relative, it will not be taken. Then the Blessed One said to the venerable Kasyapa: 'Kasyapa, give the nun Lotus Color five robes from the Great Temple.' The venerable Kasyapa gave the nun Lotus Color five robes from the Great Temple. Then, because of this event, this origin, this occasion, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, rebuked Nega, scolded her in various ways, and fully saw the ten benefits of enacting the precepts. 'My hearers, the basis for learning the discipline should be recited as follows: If any monk takes cloth from a nun who is not a relative, it is an offense entailing forfeiture.' Thus the precept was established. The place was Shravasti. The person was Nega. The affliction was desire. The offense was taking cloth from a nun who was not a relative. The origin of the permission is: The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park. In Shravasti there lived a householder who took a wife from the same caste, and he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed himself with her. He thought, 'I have many possessions, but I have not taken any provisions for the next world.' So he sat with his hands on his cheeks, absorbed in thought. His wife saw him and said, 'Lord, why are you sitting with your hands on your cheeks, absorbed in thought?' Good wife, I have many possessions, but I have not taken any provisions for the next world. If I were to offer food to the monastic community of monks, including the Buddha, and give each one a set of new cloth clothes, I would be able to for the next world

nor will he leave empty-handed. The wife said, 'Prince's son, do so.' Then that householder went to where the Blessed One was, and having gone, he bowed his head at the two feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the Blessed One truly taught that householder with a Dharma-related discourse. He made him truly grasp it. He made him truly extol it. He made him truly rejoice. In many ways, he truly taught with a Dharma-related discourse. He made him truly grasp it. He truly extolled it. He made him truly rejoice, and then he did not speak. Then that householder rose from his seat, placed his upper robe on one shoulder, and with his palms joined together in the direction of the Blessed One, he said this to the Blessed One: 'Blessed One, tomorrow, would you please accept an invitation to my house for a meal together with the Sangha of monks?' The Blessed One did not speak to that householder, thereby granting his request. Then that householder, knowing that the Blessed One had granted his request by not speaking, was exceedingly pleased and rejoiced at the Blessed One's acceptance. He bowed his head at the two feet of the Blessed One and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then that householder prepared clean and excellent food and drink that very night, and the next morning he rose early, prepared the seats, and set out water. Then he invited the Blessed One, saying, 'Venerable One, it is time for the meal. May the Blessed One know that the time has come.' Thus he invited the Blessed One for the meal. Then the Blessed One, in the morning, having put on his lower robe, taken his bowl and Dharma robes, surrounded by a gathering of monks, and with the Sangha of monks leading the way, went to the residence of that householder, and having arrived, he sat down on the seat that had been prepared for the Sangha of monks. Then that householder, knowing that the Buddha and the Sangha of monks were seated comfortably, satisfied them and strengthened them with clean and excellent food and drink from his own hands. In many ways, he provided food and drin
