There are things called "..." etc. Among them, for a village surrounded by walls, any road that can be reached by a bamboo vehicle with six oxen, or a road where crows fly and perch, is nearby. For a village surrounded by fences, any road that can be reached by the dust raised by goats and sheep, or a road with the excrement of people with natural shame, is nearby. For a village surrounded by ditches, any road that can be reached by a single-laddered road, or a road where a discarded broom rolls up large clods of earth, is nearby. From the basis of the three distinctions of villages, among those distinctions of nearby places, the two nearby places of a village surrounded by walls, and the first nearby place of a village surrounded by ditches, are the demarcated nearby places. The two nearby places of a village surrounded by fences, and the last nearby place of a village surrounded by ditches, are the nearby places that require effort, because those are the nearby places that can belong to the scope of the dwelling through effort. The nearby place that is close to the dwelling through intimate use is the direct business of the dwelling, and walking, dwelling, dust, etc., pervade it, belonging to this scope. The scriptures say that houses, etc., where sewing, pounding, grinding, children playing, etc., take place, are nearby places. On an uninterrupted road, a monk and a person carrying robes, walking not alone or in large numbers, but within forty-nine spans before and after, are nearby. To the left and right, whatever people consider to belong to the same road is nearby. Other boundaries separated by sky and water, etc., are not nearby even if they are next to each other. What belongs to the vicinity of a village is not the vicinity of a monastery. For example, even if a boundary is demarcated in the vicinity of a village, it will not become a boundary. If a village's vicinity later appears within a boundary that has already become a boundary, then it is only a temporary boundary, like something that happens by chance. As shown above, those nearby places belong to the scope of the dwelling. Other than that, it is not within the scope of the dwelling, so the monk should place the robes in a nearby place, and himself...
