It is to prevent old feelings, to prevent new feelings from arising, to maintain one's own life, to increase strength and happiness, to be without fault, and to live happily, thinking in this way that one eats food. What is it to be diligent without sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night? It is like this, understanding the measure of food, purifying the mind from the dharmas that obscure the mind through walking and meditating at night, and also purifying the mind from the dharmas that obscure the mind through walking and meditating in the first part of the night. In the middle of the night, one comes out of the temple, washes one's feet outside the temple, and then enters the temple, lying down on one's right side, with one's feet crossed, maintaining the thought of light, mindfulness, and awareness, thinking of the thought of light in one's mind. In the last part of the night, one quickly awakens and purifies the mind from the dharmas that obscure the mind through walking and meditating. What is acting with awareness? It is like this, having been diligent in not sleeping, then one should act with awareness when walking and returning, looking slightly, looking around, contracting, stretching, wearing the monastic skirt, the robe, holding the bowl, eating, drinking, chewing, tasting, going, staying, sitting, sleeping, not sleeping, speaking, not speaking, and dispelling drowsiness. Then, if even the restraint of precepts is extremely difficult to obtain, then there is no need to mention things like guarding the sense doors. Even if the precepts are completely pure, it is very difficult to find good friends. This shows that good spiritual friends, hearing and contemplating the Dharma, being without obstacles, increasing generosity, and the adornment of a renunciate are rare. What is a good spiritual friend? Having eight causes, it is a good spiritual friend who is complete in all aspects.

What is without obstacles? That is, without internal obstacles and external obstacles. Furthermore, there are three kinds of obstacles: the obstacles of application,
