Possessing those and those thoughts. One or two or many exist, meaning any number is acceptable, more than two is many. If "those," it means those who follow along. "To the monks," means to these Dharma holders. "Thus said," means the words that follow are said thus. "Venerable ones, whether you do good," means do not even strive to do good. "Or do evil," means do not even prevent doing evil. "To this monk," means to Devadatta. "Say nothing at all," means do not say even a little. Why is that? Venerable ones, this monk is a speaker of Dharma, a holder of the Vinaya, among which a speaker of Dharma means speaking of reason. A holder of the Vinaya means following the Agamas. Furthermore, Dharma is the Noble Eightfold Path, namely right view, right thought, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. Vinaya is right speech, right action, right livelihood. Furthermore, a speaker of Dharma speaks meaningfully. A holder of the Vinaya speaks as if gentle and friendly. That is only the praise of those who follow along, but Devadatta himself does not possess those qualities. "This monk, having correctly taken up the Dharma and Vinaya, having fully grasped them, applies terms accordingly," means he applies terms according to how the Dharma and Vinaya are, according to how the teachings of the Buddha are. "Having correctly taken up" means focusing on that. "Having fully grasped" means the same as holding firmly. "This monk speaks knowingly, not unknowingly," means because he understands the meaning, not because he does not understand the meaning. "Whatever this monk likes and tolerates, I also like and tolerate," if he says so, it means if he says whatever basis this monk Devadatta likes and tolerates, we also like and tolerate. "Likes" means through a way that accords with the mind.

The so-called "patience" is to understand through reason. For the time being, these are words of compliance. The so-called "to those monks" refers to Kokalika, Khandadravaka bird, Katamorakatishya, and Hai Shi and others. The so-called "by the monks" refers to these Dharma holders. It is said: Venerable ones, whether you are good or bad, do not say anything to the monks. What is the reason for this? Venerable ones, this monk is a speaker of Dharma, a holder of Vinaya. This monk truly upholds and is proficient in Dharma and Vinaya, and then interprets them. This monk speaks knowingly, not unknowingly. Do not say: What this monk likes and tolerates, we also like and tolerate. What is the reason for this? Venerable ones, this monk is not a speaker of Dharma, not a holder of Vinaya. Venerable ones, this monk is a speaker of non-Dharma, a speaker of non-Vinaya. This monk does not truly uphold and is proficient in non-Dharma and non-Vinaya, and then interprets them. This monk speaks unknowingly, not knowingly. Do not say: What this monk likes and tolerates, venerable ones, we also like and tolerate. Venerable ones, do not want to split the Sangha, but want the Sangha to be in harmony. Venerable ones, be in harmony with the Sangha. The Sangha is in harmony, not split, everyone is happy, no disputes, unanimous opinions, unanimous voices, like water and milk mixed together. If you can clarify the teacher's teachings, you can live in happiness. Venerable ones, abandon those who follow the split of the Sangha and speak discordant words, and exhort them in this way. Exhortation should be done as previously stated. The so-called "when the monks exhort the monks in that way" refers to the time when exhortation is done in that way. If you give up that basis, it means if you give up that view. The so-called "that's good" means that it's good that way.
