For each offense, a transgression occurs. If one enjoys offerings together with those who have vowed to uphold the precepts and those who have not vowed to uphold the precepts, it constitutes a transgression. If one distinguishes those who are not on one's own side based on names and views, it constitutes a transgression. If there is no downfall, it is when obstructing in a way that is inconsistent and unlawful, there is no downfall. If obstructing with consistency and lawfulness, one having and one not having, there is no downfall. If obstructing by disguising as consistent and disguising as lawful, there is no downfall. If obstructing in a way that does not conform to the Dharma and the Vinaya, and the teachings of the Teacher, there is no downfall. For those who have not vowed to uphold the precepts enjoying offerings together with those who have vowed to uphold the precepts, there is no downfall. For beginners, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by feelings, there is no downfall. What should be learned is that in all places and at all times, one should not rely on actions that lead to the division of the Sangha, including minor transgressions, major transgressions, and actual actions. As soon as a Sanghavasesa arising from instruction occurs, one should confess while sitting on the same seat. If one has not confessed that basis, and has not confessed separately, one should not undergo all the karmas of petition, petition and two petitions, and petition and four petitions. Subsequent corrections will be explained below. The tenth Sanghavasesa, which is the making of a schism in the Sangha, has been explained. The Extensive Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra, a Compilation of all Vinaya, Volume Seven. Following that, the topic related to the Sanghavasesa is the same as the topic related to the Sanghavasesa of making a schism in the Sangha. In particular, when the Blessed One had completed the topic of making a schism in the Sangha, establishing precepts, and determining downfalls, the Blessed One, while still sitting on the same seat, wishing to establish the second basis of learning for the hearers of the Vinaya, then addressed the monks: Monks, there is still some work for the Sangha to do, do not rise from your seats for a while. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly acted, and the Blessed One mentioned Kokalika, Khandadrava birds, and Khadamorakati.

Shya and Ocean-given spoke to them: Kokalika and Khandadrava-bya and Kada-mora-katishya and Ocean-given, you knowingly pretend to divide the harmonious Sangha of monks, and having taken up and firmly grasped the dispute that will cause division, you act as friends of that person and follow the words of discord. To the monks, they say: Venerable ones, whether you are good or bad, do not say anything about this monk. Why is that? Venerable ones, this monk is a speaker of the Dharma, a speaker of the Vinaya. This monk has correctly taken up and firmly grasped the Dharma and Vinaya, and then explains them. This monk speaks knowingly, not unknowingly. Whatever this monk likes and endures, we also like and endure. Is that true? Venerable ones, no. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, condemned in many ways what is not in accordance with the conduct of monks, what is not in accordance, what is not appropriate, what is not in accordance with the rules, saying that this is not what a renunciate should do. Having thoroughly seen the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, my Shravaka disciples should recite the basis for learning the Vinaya as follows: There are one or two or many monks who are friends of that monk, following the words of discord. If they say to the monks: Venerable ones, whether you are good or bad, do not say anything about this monk. If they say this, then the monks should say to those monks

We thus uphold the Dharma and the Vinaya, well grasped, and subsequently apply terms. Do not say, 'This monk speaks knowingly, not unknowingly. We also desire and tolerate what this monk desires and tolerates.' Why? Because, venerable ones, this monk is not a speaker of the Dharma, not a speaker of the Vinaya. Venerable ones, this monk speaks what is not Dharma, speaks what is not Vinaya. This monk thus upholds what is not Dharma and what is not Vinaya, well grasped, and subsequently applies terms. This monk speaks unknowingly, not knowingly. Venerable ones, do not desire and tolerate what this monk desires and tolerates. Venerable ones, do not desire to divide the Sangha, but desire the unity of the Sangha. Venerable ones, unite the Sangha. May the Sangha be united, undivided, universally joyful, without strife, with one teaching, one discipline, like water and milk mixed together. If you illuminate the Teacher's teachings, you will abide in ease. Venerable ones, abandon this following of those who divide the united Sangha and speak discordantly,' thus should you admonish them. When the monks thus admonish those monks, if they abandon that basis, that is good. If they do not abandon it, for the sake of abandoning that basis, they should be properly admonished and properly instructed two or three times. When they have been properly admonished and properly instructed two or three times, if they abandon that basis, that is good. If they do not abandon it, then the Sangha-disrupting offense is established. The place is Rajagriha (王舍城), the person is Kokalika, Khandadeva, Katamorakatishya, and Samudradatta. The affliction is the desire to create discord. The fault is following them. Among them, this monk is called Devadatta. The monks who are his companions are Kokalika, Khandadeva, Katamorakatishya, and Samudradatta. Those who follow the speaking of discord are those who share their views.
