It is said that if one eats with hesitation, one will commit a minor offense. If one perceives something that is not Sālisbrama as Sālisbrama, one will commit a downfall, but it will not be abandoned. If one eats with hesitation, one will commit a minor offense. If it is Sālisbrama and not Sālisbrama, but one perceives it as not Sālisbrama, one will not commit a downfall. If it is one's own, one will commit a downfall. If it is someone else's, one will not. If it is one's own and someone else's, one will not. Therefore, one will commit a downfall, but it will not be abandoned. When something becomes different in kind, and when one's own property is stolen by another and then recovered, and when something is considered blessed, if it is blessed by another before it is fully enjoyed, and when something is considered to be a frequently used utensil, and when something is considered to be used with books, etc., and when something heavy can be used as if it were light, it is permissible, and one will not commit a downfall. This permission is universally applicable, and it should be understood even where it is not explicitly stated. Permission is granted when there is no other way. If it is an emergency, one will not commit a downfall if one does not allow another to take it. For example, it is permissible for the Sangha or the Stupa. If there is no one who has not fully enjoyed it due to fear of theft of gold and property, one should dig a hole and bury it oneself and leave. When one returns, one should dig it up again as before. It is said that if one changes the permission for the poor to another use, it will become a serious violation. There is no downfall when the donor permits it. For example, if the Sangha of monks who are in summer retreat are given the price of robes, etc., they should accept it. After accepting it, they should trust the donor and keep it. Furthermore, the monk should please all, whether it is Kunga Rapba or a layperson. Relying on them, all impermissible things can be accepted. Even if a monk goes there today, he should trust them for all the impermissible things, and accept and keep them for as long as he lives. If it is impossible to mix, one should take Sālisbrama and money and sit in front of the monk and say, "Venerable Elder, please listen to me. I, a monk named so-and-so, have found this impermissible thing, this impermissible thing.

The earth deity should answer, "I will accomplish what is permissible." Thus, twice or thrice. If rock candy is found, it should be made permissible to keep if needed. However, it is not completely pure because of two reasons: one is placing it without examining the person, and the other is attachment to impermissible things. For the first case, it is a minor offense; for the second case, it should be abandoned. If attachment arises to the rock candy itself, then it is not permissible. If it is uncertain whether it is a permissible thing, it should still be treated as a permissible thing. For example, how should rock candy and silver be made permissible? Whatever is likely to decay due to an impermissible thing should be taken as one's own, and it should be said, "This belongs to so-and-so." A monk should offer medicines to the Sangha, and the donor should place Kārṣāpaṇas (Sanskrit: Kārṣāpaṇa) in the market and trust the designated merchant, using them as desired. On a journey, one should take the road provisions such as bricks obtained on the way. It should be carried by one who makes it permissible. Otherwise, it should be carried by a novice. Therefore, taking ownership of rock candy should be abandoned, but it should not be accepted. The eighth chapter ends. In Śrāvastī, the ninth chapter was established because the six monks took excellent Lāva from the Nirgrantha and engaged in various kinds of deceptive practices. "Various kinds" refers to various kinds of mixing and other actions. "Deceptive practices" refers to deception, deceiving through deceptive actions. "Engaging" refers to additionally accomplishing. Whether it is conch shells, Vāṇa, Dināra, Rasavāla, thread, rice, or any other item, mixing the obtained items is engaging in deceptive practices. So, what kind of downfall will occur? A monk, in order to gain profit, mixes items that can be established as worldly names. Searching for vehicles and so on, mixing earth and gold, searching for power and so on, lending barley or rice for interest, searching for winnowing baskets and small winnowing baskets and so on, giving away collections of jewels for the sake of collections of conch shells, and
