The Condensed Vinaya, Special Spiritual Friend. The Condensed Vinaya. Special Spiritual Friend. In Indian language: Vinaya-saṃgraha. In Tibetan: The Condensed Vinaya, Volume One. I prostrate to all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and noble Śrāvakas! By what supreme discipline, those scattered sentient beings who are blamed, In the density of the mind, those wandering and submerged, That power of darkness, causing it to pervade all, The sun of discipline, with hands of light, I prostrate to that clarity! What are the root and branches, what are the distinctions of scattered topics, what is said in the sutras, What are the five matters, the sixteen matters, and the explanations from the questions of the close attendants, What are the Brahmin girl, and the discipliner, and what is said from the mother's matters, Like the radiant light of precious qualities, those qualities blazing, they are here established in order. The so-called "Prātimokṣa" is so named because it is the extreme liberation from the aspects of afflictions not yet exhausted, even the smallest of the small. The so-called "hearing" is the complete determination of words and meanings by the ear consciousness and the mental consciousness arising from it. The so-called "difficult to obtain" is because Buddhas appear in hundreds of kalpas, and good destinies are difficult to obtain. The so-called "in hundreds of thousands of kalpas" means that it is difficult to obtain even in hundreds of thousands of great kalpas, and even more difficult to obtain in hundreds of kalpas, so it is said to show its abundance. The so-called "grasping" is the understanding of words and meanings by wisdom. The so-called "holding" is to not forget it for a long time by remembering it and reciting it. The so-called "accomplishing" is to diligently apply body, speech, and mind to its meaning. The so-called "extremely difficult to obtain" is because even diligent practitioners can only obtain it with great merit. Therefore, this verse shows the difficulty of obtaining the Prātimokṣa from the perspective of scripture and realization. Hearing, grasping, and holding are from scripture, and accomplishing is from realization. "The appearance of Buddhas is happiness," which means that the Buddha appears at the time of entering the womb or at the time of birth. In the manner of later appearance, the Bodhicitta.

It is called "Bala Sangye." Or, when manifesting perfect enlightenment, the Buddha appears. At that time, in order to obtain the cause of being called Buddha, which is the all-knowingness itself, one becomes a Buddha. If liberated, it becomes the cause of joy and happiness, so the main thing is that happiness, just like saying "not happy." "Teaching the Dharma" means explaining the twelve branches of scripture, such as the Sutras. "Sangha" refers to the eight great beings. "Harmony" means that morality, views, conduct, and livelihood are the same, up to the point of "acting as one, without difference." "Those in harmony" are for the purpose of completely taming the precepts. "Asceticism" means practicing the three trainings, because afflictions cause suffering, hence it is asceticism. Therefore, this verse shows that the emergence of the Three Jewels is the cause of happiness. The third verse shows that relying on a virtuous friend and abandoning bad friends is the cause of happiness. The first half and the second half are in order. Because one has gone far away from sins, one is called "noble." "The virtuous ones" refers to the noble ones themselves, indicating "good." "Children" refers to those who are not noble, that is, those who commit sins. The fourth verse shows the detailed classification of virtuous friends. There are two types of noble ones: conventional and ultimate. There are also two types of conventional truth: those who abide in the limb of tranquility and those who abide in the limb of insight. Among them, "Seeing one who is virtuous is happiness" refers to abiding in the limb of tranquility. Because one has abandoned the cause of arising, one has gone far away from sins and is a conventional noble one. "Hearing the extensively learned is happiness" refers to abiding in the limb of insight. The latter half shows that abiding on the edge of tranquility and insight is the ultimate noble one, that is, the virtuous friend. An Arhat is the characteristic of the Dharma that no longer causes the fire to arise in samsara, and it also shows complete liberation from existence. Liberation from others means without the residue of aggregates. What is said is the nature of the truth of suffering, aggregates and
