Due to indulgence, not shaving the Sangha's hair, not indulging in the transgressions that have been declared as such, not proceeding for arising, not showing how to gather with offerings according to what is appropriate, not requesting to expel the dwelling within the boundary, not returning from the committed transgressions, relying on the king and the appointed gathering place and non-Buddhists and individuals, not relying on the Sangha, holding the banners of householders and non-Buddhists, relying on non-Buddhists, practicing all downfalls, not learning the precepts of monks, scolding the monks, being angry, revealing faults, causing the Sangha's gains to disappear, thinking of making them have nowhere to go. If one possesses twenty qualities that are the opposite of these, then one should request forbearance, and should abide in this way. By the command of the Thus-Gone One, the venerable Ananda and the companion monk-steward appointed a speaker with five qualities on the road, quickly going to Red Mountain, Nabaso, having destroyed the house, did the work of expulsion, and those reddish-yellow ones who acted together with them, having heard on the road, went to Shravasti and committed the downfall according to the Dharma. Having seen them, they said: "Venerable one, the action done is to go as one pleases, for similar downfalls, it was done to us, but not to them." The monks, in order to prevent them, rebuked and admonished them, and because they were not prevented by the request and the four actions, on the basis of enjoying material possessions, the twelfth was established with the affliction of being stingy towards the household. A village is a place where there are no shops or walls, etc., surrounding it. A place without walls, etc., surrounding it is a town. The word "by way of type" can also include a city, which is a place with walls, etc., surrounding it. Destroying a household means destroying households for two reasons: one also engages in sinful deeds, and also speaks unpleasant words to others. How does one engage in all sinful deeds? That is, relying on women's places and sitting and lying together, etc., and similar things, flowers and fruits, etc.

Giving is for the enjoyer. How is it to proclaim unpleasant things? It is to proclaim unpleasant things by all four ways of monks and others engaging in misconduct such as discipline. "Practicing all sinful dharmas" means that expelling from the household causes faults to increase. "Seeing" means by eye consciousness. "Hearing" means by ear consciousness. "Knowing thoroughly" means by others than that collection of consciousness. Those indicate seeing, hearing, and doubt. "Expel" means showing the action to be expelled. "Going by desire" means going with attachment to those who have not been expelled. "Going by hatred" means being completely entangled with hatred towards those who have been expelled. "Going by ignorance" means not knowing to expel from the household those who have not been expelled, that is, due to delusion. "Going by fear" means not responding due to fear to those who have not fallen. Some do not expel, referring to those with red or yellow color, etc. "To be instructed" means to instruct gently. "Two or three times" means by petition and four actions. If one sits on the ground and instructs while sitting in the sky, or in reverse, or outside the boundary, it should be said that it is not instruction. If one acts without petition, it is not instruction. If one speaks of "going by desire" etc. from the beginning, one has committed a misdeed. Even if one does not give up at the time of gentle instruction, it is still a misdeed. At the time of petition, it is a grave offense. Similarly, if the statement of the first action is completed, the second is purified, and the third is all completed, if one instructs according to the Dharma, it is a sanghavasesa. Otherwise, it will not become a sanghavasesa offense. For those who go by desire, if one perceives them as not going by desire, or if one has doubt, it is also a grave offense. If one perceives them as going by desire, there is no offense. For those who do not go by desire, if one perceives them as such or has doubt, it is a sanghavasesa. If one perceives them as going by desire, one has committed a misdeed. Without having done the act of expulsion, going by desire.
