Regarding caste and race, the term "should be examined" means to examine one's own caste and non-caste separately. The term "others' disagreement" refers to the non-caste of others. Regarding "others' done and undone, not so," it means that one should not examine the completeness and incompleteness of others. As it is shown, because of speculating on the merits and faults of others, attachment and hatred arise. Therefore, abandoning speculation on others, if one can examine oneself and hope to become better, then later there will be an opportunity to examine others, as it is shown. The disciples of the Blessed One, the Tathagata Golden Light Buddha, also became less faulty, merely because they have desire and generate meditation. In order to completely abandon their faults, the Blessed One abbreviated the Pratimoksha Sutra in this way, reciting it every half month, which is: In higher mind, be careful; In the four abilities of the able, learn; Near peace, always mindful; Protector, free from sorrow. Among them, the term "higher mind" refers to the four dhyanas. The term "be careful" means to abandon desire, arrogance, and the clinging to views as superior, and to be careful. After showing abandonment, in order to show what should be taken, it is said, "Learn in the four abilities." The term "able" means one who has wisdom, and because of repeated practice, the able one is the Buddha, the Blessed One. The four abilities of that able one are the Four Noble Truths, which are those that generate the able one. To learn in them means to learn excellently and diligently. If one learns in them, what will be the result? In order to show the result, it is said, "Near peace, always mindful." With near peace and always mindful, one should know that it is showing the nature of protection. Among them, the term "near peace" means equanimity, which is the subduing of body and speech. The term "always mindful" means always abiding in mindfulness. The term "protector" means guarding one's own mind. The phrase "free from sorrow" shows goodness, sorrow.
