How is it? 'Failing' refers to any transgression, whether with remainder or without, from the five categories of failings. The state of having failings is twofold: one is knowing, which is having failings due to the fault of one's own nature; the other is unknowing, which is having failings due to the fault of one's own nature. Among these, 'knowing, which is having failings due to the fault of one's own nature' means that when someone speaks of a person with failings, knowing the failings through things, directions, thoughts, the four great categories, promises, etc., that is, the basis, preparation, or preparation of preparation of any of the five categories of failings, these faults of one's own nature are having failings. 'Unknowing, which is having failings due to the fault of one's own nature' means that when someone speaks of a person with failings, after speaking, forgets the failings, confesses to the Sangha, and then forgets things, directions, thoughts, the four great categories, promises, etc., unknowing the failings, that is, the basis, preparation, or preparation of preparation of any of the five categories of failings, these faults of one's own nature are having failings. Thus, having failings itself is the third cause of conflict. Among these, the third conflict is dispute arising from failings, that is, dispute arising from failings refers to relying on knowing failings, which is having failings due to the fault of one's own nature, and when knowing, having failings due to the fault of one's own nature. Because an enemy speaks unpleasant words, the conflict of mind being biased, when knowing, having failings due to the fault of one's own nature, the conflict of faults without extension arising from this, and the two kinds of conflicts with extension, that is, temporary conflicts, and conflicts related to all the Sangha, etc., these causes of failings related to samsara, one should promise dispute, and pacify it by remedying it through public mediation, spreading grass, etc., and when unknowing, having failings due to the fault of one's own nature, etc., seeking its nature and

Giving alms, and as for the conduct of dwelling in other places that should be practiced, etc., along with such retinues, the root of transgressions, seeking the nature of that dispute and causing it to enter, thereby pacifying what arises by giving purification to what is necessarily held. This is called dispute because of transgression. Thus, the third cause of contention, being endowed with transgression, from the very nature of transgression, the third of contentions, it should be known that dispute arises because of transgression. What is it like not to give what is in accordance with the action? The term action refers to the one hundred and one actions such as requests, which are the actions of the nature of purification and release, etc. Among them, not giving what is in accordance is of two kinds: not following the assembly, and causing it to return. Among them, not following the assembly is when a monk belongs to the boundary of that place, is fit to complete the number of the assembly, and does not follow into the assembly of the Sangha with body or intention, that is not giving what is in accordance. Causing it to return is when a monk belongs to the boundary of that place, abides in his own nature, his conduct is not impaired, his speech is well guarded, he knows the actions of discipline, and without hatred, he causes it to return because other actions are not in accordance with the Dharma, that is not giving what is in accordance. Thus, for actions such as requests, not giving what is in accordance because of not following the assembly and causing it to return, this is the fourth cause of contention. Among them, the fourth of contentions, dispute arises because of action, what is called dispute because of action is when, for actions such as requests, because of not following the assembly and causing it to return, for the donation that is not in accordance, relying on that, because the enemy speaks words that are not in accordance, the mind is focused on contention, fighting, revealing faults, and debating, etc., along with retinues, from the cause of action, dispute is manifestly subdued, and by giving many rules, causing the continuum to become one, thereby pacifying what arises, and the cause and retinue of abandoning others, for a monk endowed with transgression, the Sangha appoints someone who speaks of the faults of others, and causing him to enter into guidance, and in a solitary place
