These are the four disputes arising from the four causes of contention. The phrase "by these seven dharmas for pacifying disputes" refers to the seven, such as settling disputes in the presence [of the sangha]. The phrase "according to the Dharma and the Vinaya, and the Teacher's teachings" means according to the Dharma that establishes what is to be known, the Vinaya that establishes discipline, and the Teacher's teachings that teach the great teachings and the black teachings. The phrase "should be tamed, should be pacified, should be completely pacified" should be understood as being in accordance with the order of the stages of small, medium, and large, or the stages of preparation, actual [practice], and conclusion, or the stages of the Dharma, the Vinaya, and the Teacher's teachings. The phrase "Venerables, I have recited these seven dharmas for pacifying disputes" is the conclusion of reciting the dharmas for pacifying disputes. The phrase "these seven dharmas for pacifying disputes" refers to the seven that were previously taught. The phrase "have recited" is stated in order to conclude the meaning of the vow and to please the listeners. Then, I will ask the Venerables two or three times, "Are you completely pure in this?" The phrase "If the Venerables are completely pure in this, then it is accepted as such by not speaking," is to proclaim the establishment of the Dharma for pacifying disputes. The phrase "in this" refers to the recitation of these seven dharmas for pacifying disputes. The remainder is the same as before. Thus, having briefly explained the differentiation of the seven dharmas for pacifying disputes and the commentary on the text belonging to the Pratimoksha Sutra, now the chapter containing the basis of disputes and requests will be discussed. In what was said, "seven dharmas for pacifying disputes," the word "dispute" means contention, which is mental inclination due to an enemy speaking disagreeable words, but it is not anger. If mental inclination due to an enemy speaking disagreeable words is contention, and that itself is dispute, then how is it said that fighting, exposing shortcomings, and engaging in disputes that arise in the monastery are called disputes for the sake of fighting? Thus, fighting and so on

Because the enemy speaks discordant words, the mind is biased, so it is the wheel of strife. Know that those arising from association with it are also included here. There are four kinds of strife: strife for gambling, strife for not choosing, strife for falling, and strife for affairs. Strife arising from the cause of gambling is strife for gambling. Strife arising from the cause of not choosing is strife for not choosing. Strife arising from the cause of falling is strife for falling. Strife arising from the cause of affairs is strife for affairs. As it is said, in order to determine the self-nature of these four strifes, from the four causes of strife, the four kinds of strife arise in order. What are the four causes of strife? They are: falsely establishing the suchness of things, abandoning others by establishing instructions and so on, being complete with downfall, and not giving what is in accordance with karma. What is falsely establishing the suchness of things? Thing means the established Dharma, and the thing of the established discipline, that is, the Dharma and the Vinaya, the teacher's doctrine, and those belonging to the category of downfall. Suchness means the suchness of how the Dharma is established, and how the discipline is established, that is, Dharma and non-Dharma, Vinaya and non-Vinaya, the teacher's doctrine and the non-teacher's doctrine, downfall and non-downfall, etc. The self-nature of this thing is the synonym of self-nature. Falsely establishing means uncertainty, such as saying that the established Dharma is, or is not, the established discipline is, or is not, thus leading to both.
