My Commentary, Chapter Twenty-Five. Now, the method for pacifying disputes is to be explained. For this, a verse is stated: 'Manifest memory, not deranged, Likewise, the nature of many, Like scattering grasses, Also to be promised.' Thus it is said. The meaning and necessity of the word 'verse' are as before. There are seven methods for pacifying disputes: pacifying through manifestation, pacifying through memory, pacifying through non-derangement, giving many precepts, causing to seek its own nature, like scattering grass, and to be promised. The verses of the verse are connected in order. The venerable ones, these seven methods for pacifying disputes, come from the recitation of the Pratimoksha Sutra every half month, which shows the scriptural basis for pacifying disputes. The method for pacifying disputes means unifying the four disputes, and it is called Dharma because it holds the characteristic of being faultless. These seven refer to the seven that will be mentioned below. 'It comes from reciting the Pratimoksha Sutra every half month,' which means that when reciting the Pratimoksha every half month, it comes from the recitation of the Vinaya holders. One who should be pacified by manifestation should be given pacification by manifestation; one who should be pacified by memory should be given pacification by memory; one who should be pacified by non-derangement should be given pacification by non-derangement; one who should be given many precepts should be given many precepts; one who should be caused to seek its own nature should be given causing to seek its own nature; one who should be scattered like grass should be given like scattering grass; one who should be promised should be given a promise. This means that the dispute arising from the four causes of dispute is unified by the seven methods of pacifying disputes, giving purity, correcting errors, giving the combination of holding onto certainty, and causing to give conforming actions, thereby pacifying the dispute according to the circumstances. So, what are the four causes of dispute? To wrongly assert the reality of things, and to reject others by establishing instructions, etc.
