Once, a monastic community was invited to another household to receive offerings. That household had a lot of vegetables but little rice, so the group of six monks covered the rice with the vegetables. The householder saw the vegetables and asked, 'Venerable ones, is there no rice?' They said, 'Householder, look here.' That person gave them more rice. The monks returned to the monastery and said, 'Venerable ones, the previous householder made good rice, so there were few vegetables. The later householder made good vegetables, so there was little rice.' The group of six monks said, 'We received a lot of vegetables before and a lot of rice later.' As they were recounting what had happened, the monks said, 'Is it proper for you to do that?' They said, 'It may be proper or improper, but that's what we did.' At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, 'Because of craving, one should not cover vegetables with rice, nor should one cover rice with vegetables. One should train in this way.' Therefore, the rule was established. The place was Shravasti. The people were the group of six monks. The affliction was roughness. The offense was because of craving, covering vegetables with rice, and covering rice with vegetables. Therefore, because of craving, one should not cover vegetables with rice, nor should one cover rice with vegetables. 'One should not cover vegetables with rice, nor should one cover rice with vegetables' means that with the intention of wanting to obtain more, one does not cover vegetables with rice, and one does not cover rice with vegetables. Therefore, one should properly receive food in this way. Here, the fundamental transgression is classified: In the actual situation, if one does not train in this way, it becomes the basis for an offense that must be confessed. The agent here is the thought of craving, and covering one with the other, and the food itself. There is only one branch here, which is the actual accomplishment. Regarding the combination and the accomplishment of the combination, blame is given as appropriate, as before. The forty-sixth precept. Regarding the establishment of the rule and eating, one should not hold the alms bowl

The basis of the matter is: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. When the monks were holding their alms bowls over food and drink, Brahmins, householders, and heretics saw them and rebuked them, saying: "These noble ones, their pure conduct is different, why do they hold their alms bowls over food and drink? This is not proper, do not do this!" They said: "Wise ones, there is a need for this." "Noble ones, what is the need? First of all, you yourselves are ignorant and devoid of learning." Having heard them scolding extensively, at that time the monks reported to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan thought: What those householders say is true. So, as before, he made the rule that one should not hold the alms bowl over food and drink. The place was Shravasti, the persons were the group of six, the affliction was impropriety, the fault was holding the alms bowl over food and drink. Therefore, the rule was made that one should not hold the alms bowl over food and drink, that is, one should not hold the alms bowl over food and drink, and one should properly partake of the food. Here, the classification of the fundamental downfall is: In the fundamental situation, if one does not do so, it will become the basis of an act of wrongdoing that must be confessed. The agent of this is holding the alms bowl over food and drink, and the food itself. For this, there is only one branch, which is the accomplishment of the fundamental itself. Regarding the combination and the accomplishment of the combination of combinations, one should rebuke as appropriate, and this is also as before. From "One should properly partake of food" onwards, up to here, all the situations of cold and temples, etc., should be combined as the practice of properly partaking of food. The forty-seventh training is complete. The verse says: On food, do six things well, tsuk tsuk etc. five kinds, grain distinguish five kinds, licking hands etc. five kinds. Thus it is said. Regarding the meaning of the word "green barley porridge," and the necessity, it is the same as before.
