The actual object of the downfall is distinguished as follows: A bhikṣu, having blessed his own old items suitable for washing, such as Dharma robes and cushions, instructs a non-intimate bhikṣuṇī to wash, boil, or beat them. Once these actions are done, it becomes the actual object of the downfall of relinquishing due to causing washing. The agent of this is the one who primarily focuses on the object of the robes and the non-intimate bhikṣuṇī. This becomes an actual downfall through eight branches: having been blessed, one's own, old, suitable for washing, robes, being a non-intimate bhikṣuṇī, instructing, and having done it. If these branches are incomplete, there is appropriate censure. The fourth, relinquishing due to causing washing. The basis for the relinquishing due to acceptance is as follows: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada's Garden. At the time when the Bhagavan had not prohibited the bhikṣuṇīs from dwelling in monasteries, the bhikṣuṇī Utpalavarṇā (莲花色) with a retinue of five hundred, while absorbed in calming obstructions in the dark forest, were offered a suitable large piece of cloth and a portion of alms-essence by about five hundred deceitful thieves. The bhikṣuṇī Utpalavarṇā offered the alms-essence to the bhikṣus in the Jeta Grove and the large cloth to Nanda, and then went before the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan saw that Utpalavarṇā's Dharma robes were poor and her samghāṭī (僧裙) was also old, and asked Ānanda, "How has this happened?" Ānanda replied, "Venerable One, this sister is faithful, virtuous, and has a virtuous mind. She has not failed to offer or completely give away anything to the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, or those pleasing to the bhikṣus. Therefore, today she obtained a large piece of cloth and gave it to Nanda." Then, the Bhagavan bestowed five Dharma robes upon the bhikṣuṇī Utpalavarṇā from the great monastery. The bhikṣus, considering accepting extra robes from non-intimate bhikṣuṇīs, as before. Also, a bhikṣu from a non-intimate bhikṣuṇī
