Residing. At that time, the monks, due to having too many robes, were hindered in their listening, reciting, chanting, yoga, contemplation, and the inner calming of the mind, thereby slandering monks with few desires, mocking them, and speaking ill of them. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Thereafter, the Blessed One, as before, ordained: "A monk who possesses robes that have been received, if he removes the solidifying object, he shall not keep extra robes beyond ten days. If he keeps them beyond that, it is an offense of expiation involving forfeiture." The place was Shravasti. The persons were many monks. The affliction was gathering in miscellaneous affairs. The fault was losing what should be done. Among these, a monk is one who possesses this Dharma. Receiving robes means that the monk washes, sews, mends, and replaces the robes. "Removing the solidifying object" means that the solidifying object is when the Sangha pledges to reside in the early or late summer, and after the dissolution, all the summer gains and benefits of all the monks are blessed like establishing a fixed robe. "Removing" means that there are two times for removing the solidifying object: having pledged to reside in the early summer, dissolving on the fifteenth day of the middle autumn month, and laying the solidifying object on the sixteenth, then the time for removing it is the fifteenth day of the first spring month. Having pledged to reside in the late summer, dissolving on the fifteenth day of the last autumn month, and laying the solidifying object on the sixteenth, then the time for removing it is the fifteenth day of the middle spring month. "Within ten days" means at the end of ten nights. "Extra robes" means robes that are in excess of what should be blessed. "Not allowed" means not having been inspected. "To keep" means to possess as one's own. "Exceeding" means keeping beyond that limit. "An offense of expiation involving forfeiture" means that after abandoning that object, one must confess the offense of expiation involving forfeiture, therefore it is called an offense of expiation involving forfeiture. Here, the actual classification of offenses is as follows: a monk possesses robes that cover the edges of his own three wheels and are of the proper size, but have not been blessed.

If one has entered into keeping for ten days, when the first light of dawn of the eleventh day rises, it becomes the actual basis for an offense entailing forfeiture. The perpetrator of this is one whose robes have not been blessed. For this, the actual basis for an offense entailing forfeiture occurs with seven limbs: one's own, the robes, the boundary covering the three realms, possessing, not blessed, having entered into keeping for ten days, and the rising of the dawn of the eleventh day. If these limbs are incomplete, it is mitigated accordingly. Keeping of forfeiture, this is the first. The basis for the discussion of relinquishing forfeiture is: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was in Shravasti, residing in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, due to the monks having too many Dharma robes, they entrusted the bundles of Dharma robes to others, and they themselves, wanting to travel with the Dharma robes of upper and lower garments, did not conceal their bodies, nor did they put in padding. Other monks also lost the opportunity for scripture, reading, recitation, yoga, contemplation, and calming the mind within, due to the work of his mending and cleaning. Therefore, monks with few desires reproached, slandered, and ridiculed. At that time, the monks reported to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan, as before, said that if a monk, having taken hold of the Dharma robes, extracts the solidifying support, even for one night, separates any of the three Dharma robes from the boundary, unless permitted by the Sangha, this is an offense entailing forfeiture. The place was Shravasti, the individuals were many monks. The affliction was traveling with Dharma robes of upper and lower garments. The fault was not concealing one's own body, and losing the affairs of others. Regarding this, "If a monk, having taken hold of the Dharma robes, extracts the solidifying support" means as before. "Even for one night" means even at the end of one night. "Any of the three Dharma robes" means any one of the Sanghati, Uttarasanga, and Antarvasa. "Separates from the boundary" means that dawn rises elsewhere.
