He was staying in the pleasure garden of the Provider of Food for the Helpless, in the grove of the Deceased. The Venerable Nanda went to the craftsman and, after conversing for a short while, said: "Good-looking one, can you sew a Dharma robe of the size of the Sugata's (Tathāgata) Dharma robe?" He said: "Venerable, what will you do with a Dharma robe of the size of the Sugata's Dharma robe?" He said: "Miser, what loss do you have here? If you want wages, sew it." He thought, "What this person says is not wrong, what loss do I have here, I need wages, I will sew it." Having realized this, he said: "Venerable, I will sew it." He gave him the cloth and wages, and he sewed it. Nanda wore a little of it, and carried the rest on his shoulder. A Venerable and a monk saw him and said: "Venerable, look, this is a beggar, let him rest for a while." Nanda said: "Venerable, this is not a beggar." "Then what is it?" "It is the Sugata's Dharma robe." "Venerable, are you allowed to wear the Sugata's Dharma robe?" "I am allowed to wear it by stepping on the necks of enemies." "Venerable, do you have real enemies?" "First of all, you are my enemy, therefore I cannot tolerate you wearing the Sugata's Dharma robe." Therefore, why do the few monks mock the monks who wear Dharma robes of the size of the Sugata's Dharma robe? They would accuse, scold, and speak harshly. At that time, the monks requested the Blessed One (Bhagavan). Then, the Blessed One said as before: "Again, any monk who makes or has made a Dharma robe of the size of the Sugata's Dharma robe, or makes it larger than the Sugata's Dharma robe, commits a downfall." The size of the Sugata's Dharma robe is this: the length is ten times the height of the Sugata's eight fingers, and the width is six times the height. This is the size of the Sugata's Dharma robe. Thus, the rule was established. The place was Shravasti (Śrāvastī). The person was Nanda. The affliction was dressing like a guru. The offense was making or having made a Dharma robe of the size of the Sugata's Dharma robe, or larger. Again, the monk refers to Nanda, the son of Shakya, or anyone else like him. Sugata

The ground is the teacher. The phrase "by the measure of his Dharma robe" refers to the size of the Tathagata's Dharma robe. The Dharma robe refers to seven types: cotton robe, Shana robe, Zarma robe, Kotampa robe, Dugula robe, cotton-wool robe, and any of the sun-shade robes. The phrase "cause to make" means oneself or another. The phrase "if one causes to make a Dharma robe exceeding the Tathagata's Dharma robe, one commits a downfall" means: In the basic matter, the Blessed One said: Furthermore, if any monk causes a Dharma robe to be made with the Tathagata's Dharma robe, he commits a downfall. Thus, in the Vinaya, the basis of learning for the Shravakas was established. After the venerable Near-Given caused it to be made in excess, the Blessed One taught: Monks, therefore, the former is the establishment, and this is the subsequent establishment, that if one causes to make a Dharma robe exceeding the Tathagata's Dharma robe, one commits a downfall. Thus, he spoke of its preceding text. The phrase "commits a downfall" is as before. Among them, the measure of the Tathagata's Dharma robe is this: its length is ten Tathagata cubits, and its width is six cubits. Among them, this is the measure of the Tathagata's Dharma robe. What is meant by the ten cubits of the Tathagata's cubit is fifteen fathoms of a standard fathom. What is meant by the six cubits of the Tathagata's cubit is nine fathoms of a standard fathom. Among them, here the actual downfall is distinguished: Because there is no body of the size of the Tathagata's body, the measure of the Tathagata's Dharma robe, the length is five fathoms of the teacher's own, and fifteen fathoms of the standard one, the width is three fathoms of the teacher's own, and nine fathoms of the standard one. If one makes or causes to make more than that, it becomes the actual matter of the downfall that exceeds the measure of the Tathagata's Dharma robe. The agent of this is the absence of a body of the size of the Tathagata's body, and the measure of the Tathagata's Dharma robe, or the Dharma robe that exceeds that. This has four limbs, which become the actual downfall: namely, the absence of a body of the size of the Tathagata's body, and the Dharma of the Tathagata.

Is it the size of the garment? And the monastic robe itself that exceeds that, and the usable material, and that it is made by oneself or by someone appointed. If any part of those is incomplete, it should be reproached accordingly. The downfall for transgressing the size of the Sugata's (Tathagata's) monastic robe is those ninety. O venerable ones, the ninety dharmas of downfall have been recited, this is the conclusion of reciting all the downfalls. These ninety dharmas of downfall are the ninety chapters previously mentioned. Recited, this is because it concludes with the meaning of the vow, and it is said to please the listeners. To this, I will ask the venerable ones, are you pure in this? I will ask you, are you pure in this, two or three times. If the venerable ones are pure in this, then like this, not saying anything, it is understood as such, this is the proclamation of the separate establishment of the downfalls. That, refers to where the ninety downfalls are proclaimed. The remainder is the same as before. The recitation of the downfalls has been explained. Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra, by the Brave One.
