One should diligently seek to find the path of accumulation. In this regard, the two verses beginning with the word "Buddha" reveal the rarity of the path of accumulation. The one verse beginning with "The appearance of the Buddha in the world" reveals the ease of finding the path of accumulation. The one verse beginning with "If a wise person desires to benefit me" reveals that one should strive diligently after obtaining the path of accumulation. There are four ways to uphold individual liberation: being autonomous, being under the control of others, being under the control of the Dharma, and the characteristic of upholding. Among these, the phrase "A Bhikshu who is disciplined and has all powers" reveals being autonomous. The phrase "The unchanging Buddha who has renounced" reveals being under the control of others. The phrase "Those who desire definite liberation" reveals being under the control of the Dharma. The phrase "Always guard individual liberation" reveals the characteristic of upholding. These are the general meanings for the time being. Now, the meaning of the branches will be explained. In this context, from the perspective of the fruits of this life, to explain the greatness of individual liberation, the Buddha, The Vinaya, vast like a great ocean, is the essence and heart for all things that are unfathomable. This is individual liberation. Thus, three verses were spoken. The so-called "Buddha's Vinaya" is the Vinaya spoken by the Buddha. The so-called "Buddha" is the Buddha Bhagavan, because he has thoroughly understood all meanings, or because he has been liberated from all sleep of afflictions, including habitual tendencies. The so-called "Vinaya" is the Vinaya Pitaka, including the Vinaya Vibhanga, the Vinaya Basis, the Vinaya Minor Matters, and the Vinaya Supreme Dharma. Because it leads disciples to the most excellent Nirvana of all things, or because it completely subdues all faults that cause defects due to the defilements of pervasive conduct and the defilements of maturation. "Vast like a great ocean" refers to the ocean, because the Vinaya spoken by the Buddha itself is like the ocean. How is it similar? Because it is unfathomable.

It is said, "Thus," etc. Just as the ocean, the depth of its base is immeasurable, so too, the Vinaya is immeasurable in its depth of arising; just as the ocean, the edge of its far shore is immeasurable, so too, the fruit of the Vinaya is immeasurable in its edge. Of all those Vinayas, the heart and essence of abiding is this Pratimoksha. It is connected in this way. "Abiding" refers to the characteristics of the five classes of offenses and the seventeen matters, etc., which are separately established. "Heart" refers to the cause of that separate establishment of characteristics, that is, whatever is the thrower, the seed, and the instigator. "Essence" refers to the unshakeable teaching, that is, the unchanging characteristic. Therefore, the heart and essence of all the characteristics separately established, which are like the ocean of Vinaya spoken by the Buddha, without bottom or edge, is this Pratimoksha. Through this door, the greatness of the Pratimoksha is shown. This is the supreme guide of all the Dharma of the King of Excellent Dharma; this is the great shop of learning goods for the Sangha of monks. In these words, "This" refers to the Pratimoksha. "King of Excellent Dharma" refers to the Buddha Bhagavan, because he comprehends and demonstrates it. "All the Dharma of that King of Excellent Dharma" refers to all the Dharma that is taught, such as the Sutra Pitaka. "The supreme guide of those Dharmas" is like the precious minister of a king, it is a metaphorical term, because they arise in dependence on this. Again, in order to distinguish it, the words "This is," etc., are spoken. "This" refers to the Pratimoksha. "Sangha of monks" refers to the assembly of monks who desire the precious jewel of Nirvana, like merchants, with the same meaning. "Learning goods" refers to the goods for accomplishing the precious jewel of Nirvana, that is, the treasure of morality. "Shop" refers to the place where the goods of learning are stored, because all learning is gathered in the Pratimoksha. "Great" because it is the place of the precious jewel of learning, and great.
