It should be declared. Admonish correctly two or three times. After declaring correctly, if he abandons that basis, that is good. If he does not abandon it, then the Saṃghāvaśeṣa offense is established. The place is Rājagṛha (ancient Indian city, now Rajgir). The persons are Kokālika, Khaṇḍadāya, Kātimora-katiṣya, and Samudradatta. The affliction is wanting to create division. The fault is following him. Among them, "that bhikṣu" refers to Devadatta. "The bhikṣus who are friends" refers to Kokālika, Khaṇḍadāya, Kātimora-katiṣya, and Samudradatta. "Following the words of discord" refers to having those views, those desires, those thoughts. "There is one or two or many" means that it can be counted; more than two is many. If "those" refers to those who follow. "To the bhikṣus" refers to those who hold this Dharma. "For this" means if the followers say these words. "Venerable ones, whether you do good" means do not promote doing good. "Or do evil" means do not prevent doing evil. "To this bhikṣu" refers to Devadatta. "Do not say anything" means do not say even a little. Why is that? "Venerable ones, this bhikṣu is a speaker of Dharma, a speaker of Vinaya." Among them, "speaker of Dharma" refers to a speaker of reason. "Speaker of Vinaya" refers to one who follows the Vinaya Pitaka. Furthermore, Dharma is the Right View, Right Thought, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration of the Noble Eightfold Path. Vinaya is Right Speech, Right Action, and Right Livelihood. Furthermore, a speaker of Dharma refers to one who speaks meaningfully. Vinaya is like being gentle and friendly. That is only praised by the followers, but Devadatta himself does not possess those qualities. "This bhikṣu has correctly accepted and grasped the Dharma and Vinaya, and then accordingly establishes terminology" means how the Dharma is,

Just as the conduct is, just as the teacher's teaching is, in that way, names are subsequently assigned. "Having taken up correctly" means focusing on that. "Having completely grasped" is synonymous with "having firmly grasped." "This bhikṣu speaks consciously, because he is not unconscious" means that he understands the meaning, and it is not that he does not understand the meaning. "If this bhikṣu likes and tolerates something, we also like and tolerate it" means that if the bhikṣu Devadatta likes and tolerates some basis, we also like and tolerate it. "Likes" means through a way that is in accordance with the mind. "Tolerates" means through a way of understanding with reason. In short, these are words of conformity. "To those bhikṣus" refers to Kokālika, Khaṇḍadrabyā, Katimāraka-tiṣya, and Samudradatta. "By the bhikṣus" refers to these Dharma holders. Saying, "O venerable ones, whether you are virtuous or sinful, do not say anything to this bhikṣu," etc., one should instruct with admonishment. "When the bhikṣus admonish the bhikṣus in that way" means when admonishing in that way with admonishment. "If that basis is abandoned" means if that view is completely abandoned. "That is good" means that is good, because only one minor offense of fabrication has occurred, and no major offense has occurred. "If it is not abandoned" means if that basis is not completely abandoned, if one does not abandon that admonishment, then there is one minor offense in fabrication, and ultimately, there will be one major offense of not abandoning the admonishment. In order to abandon that basis, one should correctly admonish and correctly teach two or three times. "Correctly admonish, correctly teach" means to admonish with a request and the four acts. "Two or three times" means to perform one request and three karmas. Correctly admonish, correctly teach, is as before. When correctly admonishing and correctly teaching two or three times, if that basis is abandoned, that is good, means that is good, because good
