May it become the earth! The doer of this is the one who causes division while the Teacher is living. For this, with five limbs, it becomes a fundamental downfall, namely: the Teacher is living, arising in the Sangha, being stubborn about the division of the Sangha, preventing it with accordance to the Dharma, and not abandoning it at the end of the third statement of action. Among these, if the limbs are incomplete, then blame accordingly. The Sangha that causes division in the Sangha is the tenth Sanghavasesa. Fifth Chapter The basis of the Sanghavasesa that follows it is the same as the basis of the Sanghavasesa that causes division in the Sangha. In particular, thus, after the Blessed One had finished the basis for causing division in the Sangha, and the establishment of the precepts, and the laying down of the offenses. Then, while the Blessed One was sitting on that seat, wishing to establish the second basis for the disciples to learn in the Vinaya, he addressed the monks: Monks, there is still some business of the Sangha, do not rise from your seats for a while. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, act knowingly. The Blessed One said to Kokalika, Khandadra, Katimora Katishya, and Ocean-given: Do you knowingly and stubbornly try to divide the harmonious Sangha, and having taken up and held onto the dispute that will lead to division, are you acting as friends to that one, following after speaking discordant words, is this true? Venerable ones, it is. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked in many ways, saying, "It is not the conduct of a Shramana, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not what a renunciate should do," and having fully seen the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, my disciples should recite the basis of the Vinaya in this way: If there are one or two or many monks who are friends of that monk, following after speaking discordant words. If they say to the monks: Venerable ones, whether you are good or bad, do not say anything to this monk, why is that? Venerable ones

Bhikkhus, this bhikkhu is a speaker of the Dharma, a speaker of the Vinaya. This bhikkhu has correctly taken up and completely grasped the Dharma and the Vinaya, and then establishes terminology. This bhikkhu speaks knowingly, not unknowingly. If this bhikkhu likes and tolerates something, we also like and tolerate it. If they say this, the bhikkhus should say to those bhikkhus: Venerable ones, you say that, venerable ones, whether it is right or wrong, do not say anything to this bhikkhu. Why is that? Venerable ones, this bhikkhu is a speaker of the Dharma, a speaker of the Vinaya. This bhikkhu has correctly taken up and completely grasped the Dharma and the Vinaya, and then establishes terminology. This bhikkhu speaks knowingly, not unknowingly. Do not say that we like and tolerate what this bhikkhu likes and tolerates. Why is that? Venerable ones, this bhikkhu is not a speaker of the Dharma, not a speaker of the Vinaya. This bhikkhu has incorrectly taken up and completely grasped what is not Dharma and what is not Vinaya, and then establishes terminology. This bhikkhu speaks unknowingly, not knowingly. Venerable ones, do not like and tolerate what this bhikkhu likes and tolerates. Venerable ones, do not wish to divide the Sangha, venerable ones, wish for the Sangha to be in harmony. Venerable ones, be in harmony with the Sangha. The Sangha is in harmony and not divided, everyone is happy, there is no arguing, they hold the precepts together, they recite the precepts together, like water and milk mixed together, if they can illuminate the Buddha's teachings, they will abide in happiness. Venerable ones, one should exhort them to abandon such a person who follows the division of the Sangha and speaks discordant words. When the bhikkhus exhort those bhikkhus in this way, if they abandon that basis, that is good. If they do not abandon it, in order to make them abandon that basis, they should be truthfully exhorted two or three times. Truthfully.
