Lato. Then, the Blessed One, because of this event, this origin, and this occasion, assembled the Sangha of monks, and rebuked Devadatta, rebuking him in various ways, and having truly seen the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, (said:) "My hearers, the basis for training in the Vinaya should be proclaimed as follows: Furthermore, any monk who, for the sake of dividing the harmonious Sangha, stirs up strife, having taken up and clung to disputes that will lead to division, (other) monks should say to that monk: 'Venerable one, do not stir up strife for the sake of dividing the harmonious Sangha, do not take up and cling to disputes that will lead to division, Venerable one, please be in harmony with the Sangha, the Sangha is harmonious and undivided, everyone is happy, there is no dispute, the opinions are the same, the voices are the same, like water and milk mixed together, it can make the teacher's teachings flourish, and you will attain happiness. Venerable one, you should abandon this kind of behavior that divides the Sangha.'" That monk should be admonished in this way. When the monks admonish that monk in this way, if he abandons that behavior, that is good. If he does not abandon it, in order to make him abandon that behavior, He should be admonished again and again, and taught truthfully. Admonished again and again, and taught truthfully, if he abandons that behavior, that is good. If he does not abandon it, then the Sangha will establish a Sanghavasesa offense." The place is Rajagriha (Rājagṛha, present-day Rajgir, Bihar, India), the person is Devadatta, the affliction is the desire for gain and respect, and the fault is dividing the Sangha. Among them, the so-called "any monk" refers to Devadatta, or anyone else like him. The so-called "Sangha" refers to the Sangha of the Tathagata's hearers. The so-called "harmonious" means that the precepts, views, conduct, and livelihood are the same, and the activities are the same, because they are walking on the same path. The so-called "for the sake of dividing" means for the sake of creating division, for the sake of dividing into two factions. In addition, there is also seeking other teachers and seeking other paths. Seeking other teachers means abandoning the Blessed One and following Devadatta.

The method of seeking a teacher. Seeking on other paths, that is, outside the Noble Eightfold Path, the five ascetic practices of Devadatta: not eating meat, not drinking milk, not eating salt, not wearing sewn clothes, and correctly accepting to live in villages. "Practicing asceticism" means striving. "Correctly accepting and fully clinging to disputes that will cause division and abiding," means: Kokalika, Khandadravya, Kotimorakati, and that which was given by the ocean, correctly accepting and fully clinging and abiding. "Will cause division" means: division is caused by two reasons, namely association and enjoyment. How through association? That is, associating with Kokalika and others. How through enjoyment? That is, preparing food from Ajatashatru, offering it to the Sangha with five hundred vessels and enjoying it. "Dispute" means the cause of inciting quarrels, here it refers to accepting disputes for the sake of fighting. "Correctly accepting" means focusing on this. "Fully clinging and abiding" means: firmly clinging and abiding. "That Bhikshu" means: Devadatta or anyone else who is like him. "The Bhikshus" means: the people of these sects. "Saying like this" means: humbly admonishing. "Venerable one, do not practice asceticism in order to divide the Sangha," means: do not strive, because it is praying for things different from the Dharma. Therefore, abandon what will cause division, and through this matter allow the cutting of trees to create the words of division. "Correctly accepting and fully clinging to disputes that will cause division and do not abide," means: focusing on the disputes that will cause division through association and enjoyment, do not firmly cling and abide. "Venerable one, make the Sangha harmonious," means: make the discipline harmonious, the views harmonious, the life harmonious, the behavior harmonious. "The Sangha is harmonious, not divided, universally joyful, not quarreling, offering uniformly, reciting the precepts uniformly," among which, "harmonious" means consistent behavior, that is, one path.
