Accusing a monk of a defeat by means of false words that dwell on the faults of others. This becomes a fundamental downfall with five branches: the desire to ruin, accusing with false words that dwell on the faults of others, having taken full ordination, the dharma that leads to defeat, and understanding the meaning. If one of these branches is incomplete, then it is punished accordingly. This is the ninth remaining sangha, which is not in harmony with others. The basis for discussing the remaining sangha that causes division in the sangha: When the Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Rajagriha (founded in the mid-6th century BC), in the Bamboo Grove, the abode of the Kalandaka bird. At that time, there was a terrible famine, and it was difficult for the monks to obtain alms. Then, those monks who had attained miraculous powers took pure food and drink from the fruits of the Jambudvipa tree, Emblica officinalis, Bael fruit, Kapittha fruit, the fruits of other trees, rice, the nectar of the gods, and from those places that were rich, comfortable, had good harvests, and were filled with many people. They enjoyed it themselves and also distributed it to the monks. Then, the monk Devadatta thought to himself: If I could also obtain miraculous powers, I could do the same and divide the Buddha's sangha. Therefore, who is able to show me the path of miraculous powers? Then, Devadatta went to the Bhagavan and the elder monks and requested that they show him the path of miraculous powers. The Bhagavan realized that Devadatta had such a wicked intention and did not show him. Then, Devadatta went to the venerable Ajita Kesakambalin, who possessed the ten powers, and requested that he show him the path of miraculous powers. Without considering that Devadatta had such a wicked intention, he showed him the path of miraculous powers. Then, Devadatta, relying on the first dhyana, manifestly accomplished and obtained the miraculous powers of the worldly path. He transformed himself into a powerful elephant calf of noble birth and went to the young prince Ajatashatru.

Having entered a certain house and then come out, he transformed himself into a young boy with a golden chin. He would frolic on the lap of the young woman Ajatashatru, rolling back and forth, and the young woman Ajatashatru would embrace him, caress him, embrace him tightly, and even spit on him. The young woman Ajatashatru also knew that he was Devadatta, and thought, "Oh, the venerable Devadatta is even more powerful than the Teacher (Buddha)." Thus, she developed a great sinful view and came to have faith in him, acting for the sake of faith, coming morning and evening with a retinue of about five hundred chariots to serve him. They would prepare food for him, and piles upon piles of five hundred kinds of food cooked in vessels would also be offered. Devadatta would also sit at the table with about five hundred monks. Then, many monks heard of this and reported it to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One also rebuked him. Then, Devadatta, overwhelmed by gain and respect, and with his mind completely engrossed, this kind of sinful desire arose in him. He thought, "Now, the Blessed One is old and frail, and he will be tired from teaching the four assemblies. If the Blessed One were to entrust the monastic community of monks to me, I could also lead the monastic community of monks, and the Blessed One could also devote himself to dwelling in ease in this life, and thus be at ease." As soon as he arose with such a thought, his magical powers completely disappeared, and even though they completely disappeared, he did not know that he had completely disappeared. Then, Brahma Nokaja, perceiving this, informed the venerable great Maudgalyayana, and the venerable great Maudgalyayana reported it to the Blessed One. At that time, Devadatta's four friend monks, Kokalika, Khandadeva, Katimorakatishrya, and Samudradatta, went together to where the Blessed One was, and began to cause a schism in the Sangha.

The Blessed One said to the monks: "Monks, you should first admonish Devadatta and anyone else like him. Then, you should admonish them with the four karmas. Monks, even if you admonish them in this way, they will still tenaciously cling to that basis, insist on it, and make assertions, saying, 'This alone is true, and the rest is false.' Their four companion monks will also follow their dissenting views. The Blessed One said to the monks: "Monks, you should also first admonish those and any others like them. Then, you should admonish them with the four karmas. Monks, even if you admonish them in this way, they will still tenaciously cling to that basis, insist on it, and make assertions, saying, 'This alone is true, and the rest is false.'" At that time, the monks appealed to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: "Monks, Devadatta is able to divide my assembly of disciples and also turn the wheel, because there are four monks who follow their dissenting views. Having heard this, Devadatta consulted with the four following monks and began to act in order to greatly divide the harmonious Sangha. The division of the Sangha occurs for two reasons: one is to divide by making offerings with things that are different from the Dharma, and the other is to cause people to take lots by means of this matter. Then, Devadatta performed the karma and distributed the lots, and the four monks who were his companions also took lots that were not in accordance with the Dharma and divided the wheel. By the nature of the Dharma, even if the Tathagata's wheel is divided, it will return to harmony before the sun rises, but it is impossible to go beyond the rising of the sun. When he began to act in order to greatly divide the harmonious Sangha, the monks appealed to the Blessed One.
