For the benefit of others, it is summarized into three types: general summary, summary, and intermediate summary. Among them, the general summary is to summarize the general meaning into verses. For example, when explaining the categories of offenses, at the beginning of all the verses that appear in order, a verse called "general summary" is used to summarize the general meaning of the summaries, and so on. The summary is to summarize the actual meaning into verses. For example, the actual meaning of the four dharmas that lead to defeat is summarized by a verse called "summary," and the actual meaning of the thirteen sanghavasesa dharmas is summarized by a verse called "summary," and so on. The intermediate summary is to summarize the meaning of the limbs into verses. For example, the actual meaning of the thirty nissaggiya pacittiya dharmas is summarized by one verse, and then, in the occasions where these offenses are established separately, the meaning of the many extended limb sentences is summarized by a verse called "intermediate summary," and so on. Therefore, the mention of "summary" here is to summarize the actual meaning of the four dharmas that lead to defeat. Unchaste conduct and stealing, not killing people, and lying, these four dharmas are declared here. Among them, the word "not" is in the middle, and it should be combined with the two sentences before and after, that is, one should not engage in unchaste conduct, one should not steal, one should not kill people, and one should not lie. These four dharmas were declared by the Blessed One in the context of declaring defeat. Venerables, these four dharmas that lead to defeat come from the Pratimoksha Sutra that is recited twice a month. This shows the source of the declaration of defeat. The dharma that leads to defeat refers to the fault of causing others to be defeated, which is defeat. Because it leads to this result, it is called leading to defeat, which is an offense. It itself has the nature of being blameworthy, so it is called dharma. These four are...

The downfall of enjoying on the ground, the downfall of taking what is not given, the downfall of killing, and the downfall of lying. The so-called meaning of reciting the Pratimoksha Sutra every half month is that the Vinaya Pitaka in the Tripitaka is not written in letters, so everything is not manifested. If you think that reciting the precepts will lead to downfall, how do you know this? It is said that when reciting the precepts every half month, it is shown that it comes from the mouth of the Vinaya holder. Thus, this treatise of the Vinaya Pitaka, which is completely collected, is for the benefit of future generations who are dull-witted and unable to grasp the nature of words and meanings, so the Bhagavan allowed it to be completely collected. Therefore, this secret activity of the Vinaya Pitaka should not be heard by those who have not received the full ordination. At that time, after the Bhagavan realized perfect and complete enlightenment, and after obtaining the Shravaka retinue, for twelve years, the Bhagavan's Shravaka Sangha was without fault and without blisters. The Bhagavan's Shravaka Sangha also briefly recited the Pratimoksha Sutra, saying: Do no evil, do all good, subdue your own mind, this is the teaching of all Buddhas. The discipline of the body is good, the discipline of speech is also good, the discipline of the mind is also good, the discipline is good in all places, the bhikkhu who is completely subdued is liberated from all suffering. Guarding speech, etc., and subduing well with the mind, not doing any unwholesome deeds with the body, if you cultivate these three karmas well, you will attain the path spoken by the sages. Thus recited, therefore in the Vinaya, the Shravaka assembly has no established precepts. When the thirteenth year arrived, the Buddha Bhagavan, in places such as Shravasti, while staying in the village of Kalandaka, the son of Kalandaka, Sudatta, in the Dharma Vinaya well spoken by the Bhagavan, shaved his hair and beard, put on tattered clothes, and with only pure faith, went forth from home to homelessness.
