Then, the offense of sewing needles becomes real. The author of this is: the thought of attachment, and the needle itself, except for precious jewels. To this, through five limbs, it becomes a real offense: the thought of attachment itself, and precious jewels, and not giving, and a needle of cow hair or bone, or horn or iron, etc., and finding what has already been done, and not using what has already been done, and doing it yourself or having others do it. From these limbs, if the limbs are not complete, then they will be blamed accordingly. The offense of sewing needles is the eighty-fourth. The basis for the offense of repairing bed legs is: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was staying in Jeta Grove in Shravasti, in the garden of Anathapindika. At that time, a certain monk, traveling and going to the fields, went to Shravasti, and resting from the fatigue of the road, found a low bed in the doorway of a house, washed his two feet in front of it, and sat in the lotus position, and when he was drowsy, his body bent and the bed made a creaking sound. A snake appeared from below, spreading its venom quickly, and immediately seized him, and the time had come, and the righteous gods of the thirty-three heavens were born into it, and came before the Bhagavan, and obtained the fruit of entering the stream. The Bhagavan thought: Whatever slight fault has occurred, it is all because the monks sleep on low beds and wash their two feet in front of them. So the Bhagavan said: Therefore, monks should not sleep on low beds, nor should they wash their two feet in front of the bed. After the Bhagavan said this, the monks were harmed because they did not have shoes. The Bhagavan said: Those who do not have shoes should wash their heads and feet separately, and they will not regret this. The six groups of monks heard that the Bhagavan had forbidden monks to sleep on low beds, because sleeping on low beds would be seized by the rapidly spreading snake venom and die, so they made the bed legs twelve

After erecting high stakes and other things, the monks said to them: "Venerable ones, what are you doing?" They said: "Who is doing it? Haven't you seen the monks sleeping on low beds, with snake venom spreading rapidly, and it's time? You six groups are also controlled by the rapidly spreading snake venom, and it's time, do you want to set up our instruments of death?" After saying this, a few monks thought: "Why are the monks being prevented by the Sangha, yet they utter such words to scold?" When they were pushing each other and blaming each other, the monks reported to the Blessed One. At that time, the Blessed One said as before: "If a monk is to make or have made a bed for the Sangha, except for inserting the root into the hole, it should be made or have made according to the measure of eight fingers of the Sugata. If it exceeds this measure, it should be cut off, and a Patayantika is committed." The place was Shravasti (Mnyan-yod). The persons were the six groups of monks. The affliction was insatiable greed. The offense was making high bed legs. Among them, "monk" refers to the holder of this Dharma. "Of the Sangha" refers to the Sangha of the Hearers of the Tathagata. "Bed" refers to the bed itself. "Small bed" refers to the small bed itself. "To make or have made" refers to oneself or another. "Except for inserting the root into the hole" refers to: From the arising of the event, it is known that the body size of the Venerable Charka far exceeded the standard, so much so that his knees touched the edge of the bed. The Blessed One therefore taught: "Therefore, except for inserting the root into the hole, it should be made according to the standard mentioned before." In "to make or have made according to the measure of eight fingers of the Sugata," "Sugata" refers to the teacher. The so-called eight fingers are the cubit that meets the standard. "If it exceeds this measure" refers to exceeding the above measure. "Cut off, commit a Patayantika" refers to cutting off that thing and then confessing the Patayantika. "Commit a Patayantika" is the same as before. Here, a detailed analysis of the fundamental Patayantika is made: A monk

If a monk makes the legs of a Sangha's bed or similar, exceeding one cubit in length beyond the part where the tenon is inserted, or has someone else do it, it constitutes the fundamental offense of making bed legs. The agent of this is: the size of the legs of the Sangha's bed or small bed, and the intention to exceed the size. This offense becomes a fundamental offense with four branches: the legs of the Sangha's bed or small bed; the size of those legs exceeding one cubit beyond the part where the tenon is inserted; doing it oneself or having someone else do it. If any of these branches are missing, then blame accordingly. The offense of bed legs is the eighty-fifth. The origin of the offense of covering with wood cotton is: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in Anathapindika's Garden. The bed of the new monk Nanda was taken by an old monk, and the time for assigning places had come, so he thought: What method is there by which others will not take my bed? For some reason, he took some wood cotton, and thinking, 'I will spread the wood cotton and put it down,' he spread the wood cotton on the small bed. After a while, a very old monk came and said: Whose is this, O venerable one? Nanda said: It is my wood cotton. Then a monk sitting there said: Just as Nanda says, the wood cotton is Nanda's. The bed, however, belongs to the Sangha. He said: Nanda became angry and took the wood cotton, and spread a little wood cotton on the bed. That monk, without examining it carefully, lay down there, and when he arose in the morning, all his clothes were covered with wood cotton. The monks said to him: Did you lie down on a battlefield? He told what had happened. The monks who desired little blamed, reproached, and reviled, saying: Why do monks spread wood cotton on the Sangha's beds or small beds? At that time, the monks reported this to the Bhagavan.
