It is just like that. Among those, if the limbs are incomplete, they are blamed accordingly. Regarding the downfall of despising the object of learning, this is the eighty-third. The basis for the downfall of making a needle case is: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there was a naked ascetic follower named Dharma, who was a potter, and he was very devoted to the naked ascetics. At another time, a mendicant monk subdued him by teaching the Dharma, and he also took refuge in him and took the precepts. Furthermore, that mendicant extensively praised the seven bases for meritorious deeds arising from material things, and he became devoted to them and said: Venerable, I will also truly take up and engage in some meritorious deeds arising from material things. I will serve the Sangha of monks with my own craftsmanship. That mendicant went to the monastery and said to the monks: Venerable ones, I have placed the naked ascetic follower named Dharma, the potter, in refuge and in the precepts. He will serve the Sangha of monks with his own craftsmanship. Whoever wants anything, let him do it! When a monk did not have a needle case, he went to him and said: Good sir, I do not have a needle case, please make one! Venerable, what kind should I make? What is good? Venerable, it is good to make it from clay. Good sir, then make it from clay! He made a needle case from clay and gave it to him. That monk showed it to the monks, and other monks also had him do it, and others also had him do it, and others also had him do it, so his clay was exhausted. Another monk came and said: Good sir, please make my needle case! Venerable, what kind should I make? What is good? Venerable, if it is good to make it from clay, then the clay is exhausted. If you wish, I will make it from bone! Good sir, it doesn't matter, make it! He made a needle case from bone and gave it to him. That monk showed it to the monks,

Other monks also had it done that way, and had others do it. They had others do it, and thus his bones were exhausted. A poor monk also came and said: "Good-faced one, please make a syringe for me." "Venerable one, what kind should I make? What is good?" "Venerable one, if it is good to make it from bamboo, then that is bamboo." "Good-faced one, if that is the case, then make it from bone." "Venerable one, there are no bones either." "If you allow it, I will make it from horn." "Good-faced one, please do not err." He made a syringe for him from horn and gave it to him. That monk showed it to the monks, and other monks also had it done that way, and other monks also had it done that way, and other monks also had it done that way, and thus his horn was exhausted. He became poor by doing work for the monks with his own food and his own utensils. The naked ascetics, when this Dharma became manifest in faith to us, all of this became complete. Thus, this Dharma became manifest in faith to the monks of the Shakya clan, even begging for food. They began to ridicule, and at that time the monks reported it to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, as before, again established the precept: "If a monk makes or has made a syringe of bamboo, bone, or horn, it is a downfall." The place was Shravasti (Jetavana). The person was a very large number of monks who believed in this Dharma. The defilement was desire. The offense was making a syringe. Among them, "monk" means one who believes in this Dharma. "Bamboo" means bamboo itself. "Bone" means bone itself. "Horn" means horn itself. "Syringe" means two kinds of syringes, namely, those with tubes and those like awls. In this context, it is understood to mean both. "To have it done" means by oneself or by another. "Having broken it, it is a downfall" means that having broken that object, one must confess the downfall of a downfall. "It is a downfall" means as before. Among them, here is a classification of the fundamental downfalls: If a monk, other than with precious substances, makes or has made a syringe of bamboo, bone, horn, or iron, etc.
