I'm going too. O wise ones! I will also go to Shravasti with you.” Having said this, he set off with them. After going to a certain rocky place, they arrived at a place where wood was being cut. Those merchants who were cutting wood, being afraid, began to walk around the path, and that monk also went ahead. Those woodcutters saw him and said, “Hey, merchants who cut wood, where are you going?” When they saw the monk walking in front, they said, “O wise ones, it is not the fault of these merchants who cut wood, but it is the fault of this monk, the son of Shakya, who is walking in front, we should kill him.” Having said this, they beat the monk severely, even breaking his alms bowl. They also broke his bowl and water pot. They also tore his robes and, thinking he was dead, abandoned him. Those merchants who cut wood said to the monk, “Venerable one, you have obtained permission from the king to be exempted from military service in your youth. You should go to the king and tell him to cut off the hands and feet of these woodcutters.” Those people were afraid and begged the monk for forgiveness, and the monk's heart was like butter, so he forgave them. The woodcutters said, “Even if you forgive us, Venerable one, we will not forgive.” They also begged those merchants who cut wood for forgiveness, and those merchants who cut wood said, “If you woodcutters allow us merchants to cut as much wood as we want, we will also forgive you.” Those woodcutters agreed to the merchants. That monk eventually arrived in Shravasti, and the monks said to him, “Venerable one, welcome! Welcome! Did you have a pleasant journey? Venerable one, did you have a pleasant journey? I was almost killed by those woodcutters.” Because he described the situation in detail, the monks said, “Can you walk on the road with thieves who have evil intentions? It is precisely because it is not appropriate to do so that such faults have occurred.” Having said this, those monks with few desires asked, “Monks, why is that?”

They revile, saying, "He goes on the road with like-minded thieves." They give assistance, they speak harshly. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, as before, ordained that if a monk goes on the road with like-minded thieves, even between villages, it is a downfall. The place is Shravasti. The person is a monk who holds this Dharma. The affliction is not knowing. The offense is going on the road with like-minded thieves. Among them, a monk means one who holds this Dharma, or anyone else like that. "With like-minded thieves" means that thieves are those who plunder villages, and merchants who deceive others in business. "Going on the road" means going to the road of the monastery. "Even between villages" means even at a distance of one yojana. "It is a downfall" means that it burns, scorches, and causes one to fall into sentient hells, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, and wrong views. Furthermore, as long as that downfall is not confessed and not individually confessed, it obscures virtuous Dharmas. Therefore, it is said to be a downfall. Here, the fundamental downfalls are established as follows: If a monk goes on the road with thieves who plunder villages, or merchants who deceive others in business, except for escorting, guiding, or leading the infirm, if he goes on the road out of desire, at the end of each yojana, going with the thieves becomes the basis of a downfall. The agent here is: a human traveler, thieves who plunder villages, or merchants who deceive others in business, and the end of the road at one yojana. This has five branches that become a fundamental downfall: a human traveler, thieves who plunder villages, or merchants who deceive others in business, going on the road voluntarily out of desire, except for escorting, guiding, or leading the infirm, and those who are disguised, and those who have gone forth to steal, and exceeding the end of the road at one yojana.

It is a downfall. If these branches are incomplete, then they should be reproached as appropriate. The downfall of going with thieves is the seventy-first. The basis for the downfall of ordaining someone who is not twenty years old is: The Buddha Bhagavan was staying in Anathapindika's grove in Jeta's grove in Shravasti. At that time, the venerable Maha Maudgalyayana and his attendants, etc., tonsured and ordained seventeen young monks born of Sarpa. At that time, they were tormented by the weakness of hunger at the time of dawn in the night. The Blessed One heard of this and said to the venerable Ananda, and the venerable Ananda reported the matter in detail. The Blessed One said: Ananda, can monks ordain someone who is not twenty years old? Can they become monks? Ananda, someone who is not twenty years old cannot endure cold, heat, hunger, thirst, wind, sun, gadflies, mosquitoes, long-beaked mosquitoes, scorpions, snake bites, cannot endure others speaking evil words, cannot endure evil things coming, cannot endure unbearable rough painful feelings in the body, cannot endure unpleasant heat, cannot endure deadly disasters, cannot endure everything, cannot endure not caring about defilements, cannot endure, cannot accept. Someone who is twenty years old is the opposite. Then, the Blessed One said as before: Furthermore, monk, if you ordain someone who is not twenty years old as a monk, it is a downfall. That person will not be ordained, and the monks should also be reproached, so this should be established as a training. The place is Shravasti, the person is the venerable Maha Maudgalyayana. The affliction is that the habits have not been purified, and there is no distinction. The offense is ordaining someone who is not twenty years old as a monk. Among them, the so-called "monk" refers to this Dharma person, or to others like him. The so-called "person" refers to someone who is going to become a monk.
