When he understood the full extent of misconduct, he began to live with the monks who naturally resided there, and only went to prostrate at the Buddha's feet three times a day according to the Blessed One's teachings. They went to Ananda and said: Abbot, we are going to use the umbrella. Ananda heard this and said: Dharma, child, take my cushion too and go. He took his cushion and went to use it during the day, then placed the cushion under a tree. He sat alone and began to cultivate mindfulness. After that, Ananda came. Dharma said: Teacher, the cushion is placed under the tree, please go and sit there. Ananda went there, covered his head, and sat down. Because he did not find pleasure there, he stood up from the cushion and began to look in four directions. When he saw a girl tearing the fence of Jetavana, Ananda went over and said: Girl, why are you tearing the fence of Jetavana? The girl smiled. Ananda smelled and kissed her limbs, then he went to Dharma and asked: Dharma, child, did you see anything? Teacher, I saw everything except the insertion of the stake. Dharma, child, don't tell anyone. Teacher, I will not tell anyone until I see the monks who naturally reside there. Ananda said: If I cover up the misconduct and downfall of your abbot, will you not cover up mine? Teacher, even if you cover it up, I will not cover it up.
