Even if I went, it would not bring about peace and happiness of mind. Those people then went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down to one side. After sitting down to one side, the Blessed One, knowing their thoughts, habits, faculties, and nature, then, in order to have them destroy the twenty peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, and manifest the fruit of stream-entry, taught them the Dharma in such a way that they obtained the fruit of stream-entry. They invited the Blessed One and the community of monks, saying, 'Tomorrow, please come and accept our offering.' After the Blessed One accepted, they took the karshapana and went to the venerable Ananda, saying, 'Venerable Ananda, we do not have utensils, servants, or lodging. Please use these karshapana to prepare food, and we will come and serve.' The venerable Ananda said to Anathapindika, the householder, 'Householder, mix these with your other karshapana, prepare delicious food, and send it here.' Having done so, it was sent to Jeta Grove. The venerable Ananda said to those daughters of good family, 'The food is prepared, come and serve the community of monks, including the Buddha.' They came and said, 'Venerable Ananda, you are our spiritual friend, please come and serve with us.' As the venerable Ananda began to serve, two naked ascetics, one old and one young, came and begged for food from those female patrons. Those female patrons said, 'This food belongs to this prince.' The two naked ascetics begged from the venerable Ananda, and the venerable Ananda gave without thinking, giving one portion to the old ascetic and two portions to the young ascetic. The old ascetic said, 'Young one, this prince is for you, prepare yourself!' Having said that, they left.

Why, monks, do you reduce disputes? Because naked ascetics and naked female ascetics wander everywhere, and they revile, saying, 'They give food and drink from their own hands to wanderers and female wanderers.' They slander, mock, and insult. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, as before, ordained, 'If any monk gives food and drink from his own hand to a naked ascetic or a naked female ascetic, a wanderer or a female wanderer, it is a downfall.' The place was Śrāvastī. The person was the venerable Ānanda. The affliction was acting without examination. The offense was giving food from one's own hand to a naked female ascetic. Regarding this, 'any monk' means one who possesses this Dharma. 'Naked ascetic or naked female ascetic, wanderer or female wanderer' means one who lacks this mark and ordination. 'From one's own hand' means hand to hand. 'Food and drink' means the five foods and the five drinks. 'Giving' means without thinking. 'It is a downfall' means as before. Regarding this, here, the actual downfall is established as follows: If a monk gives food and drink from his own hand to another non-Buddhist renunciate, whether a naked male or a naked female, who lacks this mark and ordination, except for those who are related renunciates, sick, or have sinful views, and that food is suitable for them, giving it to their body or something connected to their body, then it becomes the actual downfall of giving to a naked ascetic. The agents here are: other non-Buddhist renunciates, and oneself giving, and the food being suitable. Regarding this, it becomes an actual downfall with five limbs: other non-Buddhist renunciates, whether naked male or naked female, lacking this mark and ordination, except for those who are related renunciates, sick, or have sinful views, and oneself giving, and the food, and it being suitable for both, and giving it to their body or something connected to their body. If those limbs are incomplete, then it is a minor offense as appropriate. The downfall of giving to a naked person.

Now, this is the forty-fourth (section). The origin of the transgression of watching the army is: The Buddha, the Blessed One, was residing in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Garden of Anathapindika. King Prasenajit of Kosala attacked a mountain village that had rebelled, and sent an army there, which destroyed and completely destroyed it before returning. He sent a second and third army, which also destroyed and completely destroyed it before returning. King Prasenajit of Kosala ordered an announcement to be made: All those in my country who live by weapons should leave. The king's army, along with its four divisions, was advancing. The group of six monks said: Friends, let us go and see what the four divisions of the corpulent army are like. They squatted down by the roadside to wait. Soon, the four divisions of King Prasenajit of Kosala's army arrived. The group of six monks said to them: Wise ones, where are you going? Venerable ones, King Prasenajit of Kosala is going to attack a rebellious mountain village. The group of six monks said: Miserable ones, can such an army conquer a mountain village? Your elephants are like pigs, but the mountain village's elephants are like piled-up mountains. Your horses are like donkeys, but the mountain village's horses are like baby elephants. Your chariots are like broken chariots, but the mountain village's chariots are like immeasurable palaces. Your men are like straw men, but the mountain village's men are like yakshas.
