, and scold, saying not to let people give. They scold. At the time of speaking ill. The monks petitioned the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, as before. Again, if a monk eats food swallowed from the mouth without being given, except for water and toothpicks, he commits a downfall. The place is Shravasti (mnyan yod). The people are the Six Groups of Monks. The affliction is neglecting the teachings and precepts. The offense is eating without allowing giving. Among them, the so-called "again, if a monk" refers to the Six Groups of Monks, or others like them. The so-called "without being given" means that neither male, female, nor hermaphrodite has given it. The so-called "food swallowed from the mouth" refers to the five hard foods and the five soft foods. The so-called "eat" means to swallow into the throat. The so-called "except for water and toothpicks" means leaving water and toothpicks. The so-called "commits a downfall" means as before. Among them, here the fundamental downfall is classified: If a monk, when hearing an unpleasant northern sound, knowingly eats food other than water and toothpicks without requesting giving, it becomes the basis for the downfall of eating without giving. The agent here is the one who mainly knows that he has not requested giving when hearing an unpleasant northern sound, and for food other than water and toothpicks. In this regard, the fundamental downfall will occur through six limbs: except for the time of hearing an unpleasant northern sound, and food other than water and toothpicks, the characteristic of giving is clearly located in the direction that can be obtained within the boundary, or being able to connect upwards with the body or connected to it by extending the arm, even a non-human who does not have the bhikkhu vows wants to give, accepting the giving through limbs or connected to it, knowing that he has not requested giving, and being aware of this, putting it in the mouth, and eating it. Among these, if the limbs are not complete, they will be blamed accordingly. The downfall of eating without giving, this is the thirty-ninth. The origin of the downfall of soliciting merit is: When the Buddha, the Blessed One, was traveling among the Shakyas,

Having arrived at the place of the Shakya clan, he resided in the Nyagrodha garden in the place of the Shakya clan. Shakya Ming heard of this and went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. After sitting down on one side, the Blessed One truly showed Shakya Ming with a Dharma-related teaching. He made him truly accept it. He made him truly rejoice. He made him truly delight. In many ways, he truly showed with a Dharma-related teaching. He made him truly accept. He truly rejoiced. He made him truly delight, and then he remained silent. Then, Shakya Ming said: Blessed One, would you please allow me to invite you and the Sangha of monks to my house for alms tomorrow? After inviting him, he left. After the alms, he taught the Dharma to Shakya Ming, and then he rose from his seat and left. The next day, the group of six monks got up early and went to the house of the patron. Those patrons said: Venerable ones, please accept alms here. The group of six monks said: We have been invited. By whom? By Shakya Ming. Then accept alms tomorrow. "So be it," said the group of six monks, and they had those patrons prepare sixty portions of food for the next day. Then they went to Shakya Ming's house. Seeing that there was no food prepared and no seats arranged, the group of six monks, who lived on the leftovers of Shakya Ming, said: Wise ones! You have invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks, but you are stingy and do not prepare alms, nor do you arrange seats. Are you going to cut off the alms of the Buddha and the Sangha of monks? Those people said: Venerable ones, have you fallen asleep? The Buddha and the Sangha of monks have already accepted alms and left. The group of six monks said: Are you going to cut off our food? Those people said: Venerable ones, we, to Shakya Ming, until the flies buzz, wait a little while. Those people went to Shakya Ming.

said, "Venerable Six Groups, you have come only now, do not beg for alms." Shakya the Great said, "Give me what little leftover food there is today." They replied, "Venerables, please sit down and partake," and they began to distribute the food. The Six Groups said, "Shakya the Great, in a very loud voice, said, 'Bhagavan, will you allow me to invite the Sangha of monks to my house tomorrow for a meal?' After inviting in this way, if the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha, can be invited with such food, then the Niddas could invite the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha, every day. What does such a poor person have? Today, take milk from the house of so-and-so patron, take yogurt from the house of so-and-so, take butter from the house of so-and-so, take fish from the house of so-and-so, take meat from the house of so-and-so, take dried meat from the house of so-and-so.' For their own sake, they took such food from the houses of others, ate it, and returned to the monastery. The monks said to them, 'Long-lived ones, where did you eat the food?' We ate it right there. 'When did you see it?' We arrived later. 'What kind of food did you eat?' We ate milk, yogurt, butter, fish, meat, and dried meat.' The monks said, 'We did not receive such food.' The Six Groups said, 'Where would a poor person have such food? We took it from the houses on the way to other houses and ate it there.' Is it permissible for you to take such food for yourselves from the houses of others and eat it? Perhaps it is permissible, perhaps it is not. Are we to starve to death?' After saying this, a few monks scolded, saying, 'Why do the monks take such food for themselves from the houses of others and eat it?' They rebuked, slandered, and insulted them. At that time, the monks reported to the Bhagavan. Then, the Bhagavan, as before, spoke about the alms food of the monks.
