When the groups of monks saw them (referring to the group of seventeen monks) rubbing their bellies, they said: "Do the venerable ones wish to eat?" "We do." They gave food and transgressions to the group of seventeen monks, and after they had enjoyed it, they walked together and began to recite. When the other monks saw them reciting, they said: "Alas, the group of seventeen monks are very diligent! Venerable ones, the Blessed One is expounding the true Dharma!" When donors and patrons give food to recipients, they give five things: they give life, they give beauty, they give strength, they give fearlessness, and they give diligence, and thus they will become happy. The Blessed One taught this, and it was well said! One becomes strong by eating, and one does not become strong by not eating. Have you eaten? We have eaten. Are you allowed to eat at the wrong time? If we cannot find food at the appointed time, should we starve to death?" they said. Some monks with few desires criticized, saying: "Why do the monks eat food and edibles at the wrong time?" They criticized, reproached, and ridiculed. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, as before, again established the precept: "If any monk eats food or edibles at the wrong time, he commits a transgression." The place was Shravasti (ancient Indian city). The people were the group of seventeen monks. The affliction was intolerance. The offense was eating at the wrong time. Among them, the term "any monk" refers to the group of seventeen monks, or anyone else like them. "Wrong time" refers to two wrong times: before dawn and after noon. "Food or edibles" refers to the five foods and the five edibles. "Eating or consuming" refers to swallowing into the throat. "Committing a transgression" refers to being the same as before. Here, the fundamental transgression is distinguished in detail: if a monk, in whatever place he resides, whether in Jambudvipa or elsewhere, from after the sun has passed noon until the first light of dawn the next day, knowingly eats food and edibles, he commits the fundamental transgression of eating at the wrong time.
