To. Then, the Blessed One, as before, stipulated: If one gathers and eats, except at the proper time, it is a downfall. The times are these: sickness is a time, work is a time, the road is a time, embarking on a boat is a time, a great gathering is a time, the food of mendicants is a time. Therefore, it was stipulated that these are times. The place was Rajagriha, the person was Devadatta and his retinue, the affliction was unpleasant desire, the offense was gathering and eating. "Gathering" means eating improperly. "Except at the proper time" means having stipulated a time. "It is a downfall" means as before. "The times are these: sickness is a time" means, for example, a sick bhikshu is unable to subsist on a single food. "Work is a time" means, for example, a bhikshu is doing work for the sangha or a stupa, even if it is only sweeping or making a mandala. "The road is a time" means, for example, a bhikshu has gone halfway, or has gone halfway and returned. "Embarking on a boat is a time" means, for example, a bhikshu has embarked on a boat and gone halfway, or has gone halfway and returned. "A great gathering is a time" means a gathering. "The food of mendicants is a time" means that even non-Buddhist renunciates are counted among mendicants. "Therefore, these are times" means that the establishment of the training is in accordance with the permissible dharma. Here, to establish the actual downfall, if a bhikshu is not sick, has not done work, is not on the road, has not embarked on a boat, but has separately determined places for food, and it is not food enjoyed by the sangha, and the bhikshus eat together, eating in the dwelling place of the sangha within the boundary, or dwelling separately, it is not a great festival, nor is it the food of mendicants, whatever is eaten, even a little, in the dwelling place, or gathering and eating, if one of these violates the road, and knowing that it is food eaten at a permissible time, then it becomes the actual downfall of gathering and eating. The agent here is a bhikshu other than those who have separately determined places for food.

Those who have become a Sangha, those who dwell within the boundary, are primarily those who recognize that they do not eat together. In this case, the ten branches become the root downfall, namely, a monk who is sick, or has worked, or has not traveled, or has not entered a boat, and is different from those who have their own designated food places, and monks who are used by the Sangha eat together, and within the boundary, and gather outside the Sangha's dwelling place, and it is not a major festival, and it is not the food of practitioners, and whatever food, even a little, is eaten or gathered at the dwelling place, whichever is not processed, and gathered there, and eaten food that is suitable for the time. Among those, if the branches are incomplete, then reprimand as appropriate. The downfall of gathering and eating is the thirty-sixth. The origin of the downfall of eating at the wrong time is: the Buddha Bhagavan was in Shravasti, residing in the Jeta Grove Anathapindika Garden of Prince Jeta. When the Venerable Mahamoggallana and other attendants completely ordained and gave full ordination to the Sangha of the seventeen young boys born in Salpa, they put on their lower garments in the morning, took their bowls and Dharma robes, and went begging for food in Shravasti. Women are practitioners of desire, so when the women saw them, they beat their chests and said: When these people were born, who could not fill the tongues of these newborns with salt, and could not put buckets on their thighs to feed them, what did those people get? The seventeen groups became very angry and said: It is good for us to fast, it is not right to hear such bad words, and then they immediately returned and fasted. They devoted themselves to the good side until their bodies lost their luster, and when their bodies lost their luster, they fell to the ground and lay down. The city dwellers and garden dwellers rejoiced, carrying food and drink, and went to Prince Jeta's garden outside Shravasti. Eat, drink, until seventeen
