It is said that if one receives offerings exceeding five and a half small 'Breu' (བྲེའུ་, a unit of volume), it will lead to downfall in all cases. This refers to the amount of dry rice. If it is cooked into porridge, it is counted as three times that amount. Five and a half small 'Breu' of dry rice is equivalent to fourteen and a half small 'Breu' of large rice. If calculated, five and a half small 'Breu' of dry rice is equivalent to one and a half Tibetan 'Bre'. The cooked amount is three times that, which is five and a half 'Bre'. For two or three bowls, the dry rice is one and a half 'Bre', and the cooked porridge is five and a half 'Bre'. This five and a half 'Bre' of porridge can be filled with condiments and vegetables, but if it exceeds this amount, it will lead to downfall. For flour and meat, and other food offerings, the limit of self-restriction is: this five and a half 'Bre' of porridge, with condiments and vegetables, should be compared and calculated accordingly. The large bowls of nuns are the same size as the small bowls of monks, and the medium and small bowls should be treated the same way. The small bowl's capacity is just enough to fill one's appetite. The so-called "if one receives more" refers to exceeding the amount of three medium bowls, which is five and a half 'Bre' of porridge, with condiments and vegetables. For flour and meat, and other food offerings, this amount should also be compared and calculated accordingly, and if one receives more, it will lead to downfall, as mentioned before. Take two or three full bowls and pour them outside the monastery, and also distribute them to the begging monks. The amount to be received is cooked fine rice, five and a half Magadha small 'Breu', which is equivalent to five and a half Tibetan 'Bre'. Only condiments and vegetables should be added. If oneself and one's companions cannot finish eating it and there is a lot left over, it should be poured outside the monastery and given to the monks who are there. "We should also eat" means that if there is a lot left over, it should also be distributed to the monks, and we ourselves should also eat.

It should also be established. If it is not much, it is not necessary to distribute it to the Sangha, but rather we should eat it ourselves. Therefore, the reason for establishing the training is that establishing the training is inevitable. Here, the root downfall is classified: Whether it is a single bhikkhu, two bhikkhus, or many bhikkhus, when entering a donor's house, for the donor's house that has not completely abandoned the offering of alms, acting against their wishes, exceeding the amount of three medium-sized bowls, i.e., dried rice, equivalent to five and a half Magadha small bushels, equivalent to half a Bre and one 'do' (Tibetan unit of measurement) in Tibet, if cooked and exceeding five and a half dry Bre of food, as well as vegetables, etc., if eating more than this amount, it constitutes the root downfall of taking more than the amount of three bowls. The perpetrator of this offense is: the donor's house has not completely abandoned the offering of alms, acting against their wishes, the bhikkhu takes and eats more than the amount of three medium-sized bowls. This offense is constituted by five limbs becoming the root downfall: the donor belongs to the human realm, whether male or female; not completely abandoning the offering of alms, acting against their wishes; exceeding the amount of three medium-sized bowls; taking and carrying from home; eating. If these limbs are incomplete, then minor offenses are constituted according to the situation. The downfall of taking more than the amount of three bowls is the thirty-third. The origin of the downfall of eating one-time food is: The Buddha Bhagavan lived in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika. After that, the Bhagavan said to the bhikkhus: Bhikkhus, I eat one-time food, and when eating one-time food, I feel light in my heart, with little harm, little fear, light movement, full of vitality and strength, comfortable and without fault, and dwell in comfort. Bhikkhus, you also come and eat one-time food, and when you eat one-time food, you will feel light in your heart.

Fields with minimal damage, little fear, light movement, endowed with life and strength, comfort and innocence, will experience the touch of ease and abide. Without abandoning food, one should eat as much as is enough. When starting to eat, even if one sees a teacher, abbot, lama, or someone like a lama, one should not stop. The five plants—roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits—will not be abandoned thereby, but the five foods—rice, warm tsampa, meat, fried pastries, and dumplings—will be abandoned thereby. The five reasons—having food, having the strength of food, starting to eat, abandoning food, and improper conduct—should be stated as abandonment. The five reasons—not having food, not having the strength of food, not starting to eat, not abandoning food, and proper conduct—should be stated as not abandoning. Furthermore, the five without remaining words—saying "throw it away," saying "give it to others," saying "go away," saying "it's finished," and saying "it's enough"—should be stated as abandonment. The five with remaining words—saying "throw it away for a while," saying "give it to others for a while," saying "go away for a while," saying "it's finished for a while," and saying "it's enough for a while"—should be stated as not abandoning. The Blessed One had taught that a monk should not eat what has been abandoned, but the group of six monks ate even what had been abandoned and ate even what had not been abandoned, so the monks were displeased. The Blessed One had taught that a monk should not eat what has been abandoned, so why did the monks eat even what had been abandoned and eat even what had not been abandoned, and were rebuked, had things thrown at them, and were insulted? At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, as before, again established the precept, saying, "If a monk, having finished eating food and abandoned it, does not discard the remainder and takes or eats food again, he commits a transgression." The place was Shravasti, the people were the group of six monks, the affliction was being negligent towards the training and disrespectful towards the teachings, and the offense was food.
