Being caused, being caused to prepare food through hearing. Food refers to the five kinds of cooked things and the five kinds of edible things. Swallowing refers to swallowing in the throat. Except for the case of being invited to the house beforehand, it refers to the case of being invited as a guest to the house beforehand. Offense, refers to the same as before. Regarding this, here the fundamental offenses are classified: If the benefactor does not invite the Bhikshuni as a guest, the Bhikshuni, with untrue merits, through the expression of language, causes the preparation of food; or, even if invited, the Bhikshuni, with untrue merits, through the expression of language, causes the preparation of leftover food, if the Bhikshu eats with awareness of this, then the Bhikshuni's act of causing the preparation of food becomes the root of the offense. The actor here is mainly the Bhikshuni who is aware of the very act of causing the preparation of food. Regarding this, both the case where the Bhikshuni is not invited and the case where she is invited become fundamental offenses through six limbs: For the case where she is not invited, it is the very fact that she is not invited, the untrue merits of the Bhikshuni, the expression of language, the food, the Bhikshu's awareness of this, and the eating. For the case where she is invited, it is the very fact that she is invited, the untrue merits of the Bhikshuni, the expression of language, the causing of the preparation of leftover food, the Bhikshu's awareness of this, and the eating. If these limbs are not complete, then minor offenses are committed accordingly. The offense of the Bhikshuni causing the preparation of food is the thirtieth. Commentary on the Sutra of Individual Liberation, eleventh volume. Verse: Again and again and one dwelling place, flour and cooking and giving strength, gathering and untimely storing, swallowing from the mouth and begging also. Refers to, the tenth fourth, the meaning and necessity of the words of the verse are the same as before. This tenth fourth also shows the ten dharmas of offense: eating again and again, eating in the dwelling place, taking more than three alms bowls, food of a single seat, giving strength to what is abandoned, eating together, eating at the wrong time, storing, taking without being given, and the offense of begging for favors.

Thus it is. Furthermore, the origin of the offense of eating is as follows: The Buddha, the Blessed One, having traveled from Rajagriha to Galava in Vaishali, resided in a mansion built near the Monkey Pond in Vaishali. The householder Dragsul, having heard of this, went to the Blessed One in Galava, and upon arriving, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat on one side. Having sat on one side, the Blessed One taught the householder Dragsul with a discourse in accordance with the Dharma, causing him to truly understand, causing him to truly uphold, causing him to truly exalt, and causing him to truly rejoice. With various kinds of discourses in accordance with the Dharma, he truly guided, caused him to truly uphold, caused him to truly exalt, and caused him to truly rejoice, without saying anything further. Thereafter, the householder Dragsul invited the Blessed One and the Sangha of monks, asking if they would accept a meal at his home the next day. The next day, when it was time for the meal, as the inviter was inviting, the Sangha of monks had already entered. The Blessed One remained in the place made of jewels, and manifestly accomplished alms-seeking. The group of six said: "Gawa and Nye Gawa, let us go to the house of the patron." They also took an alms-seeker with them, and first entered Vaishali, going to the house of the householder. They said: "Holy ones, please partake of the meal." The group of six said: "We have been invited as guests." By whom? By the householder Dragsul. They said: "Holy ones, then please partake of the mangoes." Having done so, they ate the mangoes. The alms-seeker did not eat, and they said: "Holy one, you also please partake of the mangoes." He said: "I am one who holds to a single meal." They said: "Then smell them, take them away, and eat them there." He filled a small bowl and went there. Thereafter, the householder Dragsul, knowing that the Sangha of monks was seated comfortably, offered pure and excellent food himself.

Feeling satisfied from the hand, the Bhikshu stood before him, and the Bhikshu thought: This householder will know that I have eaten the burden of mangoes in this way. As long as he does not find fault with me, I should tell him this. Then he said: Householder, not only I alone have eaten the burden of mangoes, but these six groups of Bhikshus have also eaten the burden of mangoes. The householder said: Why does the Holy One say that? He scolded and said: Holy One, do you think I do not have the burden of mangoes? He made those who live on yogurt make the kernels of the burden of mangoes. Then, the Bhikshu who observes the alms of the Blessed One, extensively reported that occasion to the Blessed One. The Blessed One, as before, prescribed: If one eats repeatedly, except at certain times, one will commit a transgression. The times are: when sick, when working, when on the road, when giving clothes, these are the permitted times. The place is the place of abandonment, the person is the six groups of Bhikshus, the affliction is attachment to food, the fault is eating repeatedly. "Eating repeatedly" means eating again and again. "Except at certain times" means setting a time. "Committing a transgression" means causing sentient beings to crave hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, and places of falling, causing them to suffer, causing them to fall. Furthermore, if the transgression is not confessed, and not confessed separately, it will obstruct virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is said "committing a transgression." "The time is: when sick" means, for example, if a Bhikshu cannot live on one meal. "When working" means, for example, if a Bhikshu has done some sweeping or painting work for the Sangha or a stupa, or has done some mandala work. "When on the road" means, for example, if a Bhikshu has gone half a yojana, or has gone halfway and returned. "When giving clothes" means, for example, if one has obtained a small or large piece of cloth. "Then that is the time" means that when the basis of training is established, that is the permitted time.
