The monks requested the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, as before, again, having embraced with a consenting bhikkhuni, entered the same boat, going upstream or downstream, except for going directly to the other shore, it is a downfall, thus he made the enactment. The place was Shravasti (Mnyan-yod). The persons were the group of six. The afflictions were desire and hatred. The offense was embracing with a consenting bhikkhuni and entering the boat together as a group of six. Among them, "which monk" refers to the group of six, or anyone else like them. "Together with a consenting bhikkhuni" means someone of the same doctrine. "Embracing" means having made an agreement. "The same boat" means having the same oar stroke, the same gunwale, and the same hull. "Entering" means riding. "Going upstream" means going in the opposite direction of the usual course. "Going downstream" means going in the usual direction. "Except for going directly to the other shore" means except for setting out to go directly to the other shore. "It is a downfall" means as before. Here, the actual downfall is distinguished as follows: unless both shores are fraught with danger, having embraced, if one or more bhikkhunis together cross the path in the same boat, except for going directly to the other shore, for each league, entering the boat together with the bhikkhuni, it becomes the basis of a downfall. The agent of this is someone without danger on both shores, without fear, and embracing the bhikkhuni's guest. For this, five limbs constitute the actual downfall: being without danger on both shores, embracing a guest of one or more bhikkhunis, entering the boat, and exceeding the limit of one league. If these limbs are incomplete, then accordingly, it is a lesser offense. The downfall of entering a boat together with a bhikkhuni, this is the twenty-seventh. The basis of the downfall of dwelling alone is: the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Shravasti (Mnyan-yod), in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's (rGyal-bu rGyal-byed-kyi tshal Mgon-med Zas-sbyin gyi kun-dga'-ra-ba) garden. Then, the venerable Acharya, having dressed in the lower garment in the early morning, taking his bowl and robes, entered Shravasti for alms.

While gradually going for alms to Shravasti from somewhere, he went comfortably to the house of the householder's wife, Sbedma. The householder's wife, Sbedma, saw the Venerable Upagupta from afar. Having seen him, she prepared a seat for the Venerable Upagupta and said, "Venerable Upagupta, please come in. Venerable Upagupta, it is good that you have come! Venerable Upagupta, please sit on this prepared seat!" The Venerable Upagupta looked inside and sat down. The householder's wife, Sbedma, also prostrated to the two feet of the Venerable Upagupta and sat facing outwards. Upagupta taught her as much Dharma as was appropriate, and then began to recall the past laughter, play, joy, and enjoyment of happiness, saying, "Sbedma, do you remember how we two arranged things like this and that in the garden, the meeting place, or some heavenly abode? How we ate like this and that, drank like this and that, arranged the dwelling like this and that, and lit butter lamps like this and that? Do you remember what we two did there like this and that?" Sbedma said, "I remember." When a beggar came there, Sbedma saw him and thought, "If I get up to offer alms, it will interrupt the Venerable Upagupta's words." So she gestured with her hand to go away. Upagupta said, "Sbedma, do you think I am telling you about the Four Noble Truths in your heart? Even if you obtain enjoyment by rejecting (with hand gestures) a hundred times like this, can't you give alms and do good deeds?" Upagupta made Sbedma offer alms and then went to the monastery. That beggar actually said to Upagupta, "Now I have actually eaten your alms." Upagupta said, "Beggar, do you know? Did you hear her (say) you (come) at first? She gestured for you to go away, and I made her call you later." The beggar said, "Was the Venerable Upagupta himself there at that time?" "Yes, he was." "Alone with a woman, alone and...
