How could happiness and agreeableness change? Let's go on a journey too! Having said that, they went to the nuns' summer retreat, had twelve nuns prepare provisions for the road, and took them along. They also took a mendicant monk and set out on a journey. When they reached beyond the boundary, they said: "Happy one and near-happy one, we respectfully abide with conduct like poison. Come here! Let each of us abide by our own conduct!" First, the happy one sat down, then the happy woman sat down. Then the happy one's companion sat down. Then the happy woman's companion sat down. Then the happy one's novice sat down. Then the happy woman's novice sat down. Similarly, the near-happy one and the chief happy woman and so on were also arranged alternately and went along. A certain attendant and a Brahmin were walking together, and when the Brahmin saw them, he said: "This is a renunciate. This is his wife. This is his son. This is his daughter-in-law. This is his grandson. This is his grandson's wife. It should be understood in this way." The near-happy one heard this and said: "Miser, I'll press your neck with my foot, that's how it is!" The mendicant thought: "It would be better for me to die than to go on a journey with these people who engage in evil conduct." So he returned and went to Jeta Grove, where he told the monks about those circumstances in detail. The monks who desired little rebuked, saying: "Why do the monks embrace the nuns' attendants and enter the guesthouse?" They rebuked, criticized, and slandered. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One said as before: "Again, if any monk embraces a nun's attendant and enters the guesthouse, except for a specific reason, it is a downfall." What is the specific reason? It is when the road is difficult to travel, when there is danger, when there is fear, or when there are various kinds of terrible dangers, that is a specific reason. Thus the rule was established, in a certain place.
