Saying, 'Let everyone be pleased with warm porridge, oil cakes, meat, fried foods, alms bowls, Dharma robes, nets, bowls, spoons, whips, small spoons, and gongs.' After saying this, some nuns brought milk porridge, some brought yogurt porridge, and some brought honey, coming to offer it to the venerable Nanda in Jeta Grove. Nida saw this and said, 'If Nida could also obtain these, he would always teach the nuns. I think the venerable Nanda will teach the nuns with good Dharma, I do not think the venerable Nanda will teach the nuns for a little food.' After saying this, some monks with few desires said to the monks, 'Why do you say this to the monks: monks teach the nuns for a little food,' saying this and rebuking them, engaging in slander. When they were reviling, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, as before, again established the precept: 'If any monk says to the monks, "Monks teach the nuns for a little food," he commits an offense entailing expiation.' The place was Shravasti, the person was Nida, the affliction was jealousy, and the offense was slander. Among them, a monk refers to the son of Shakya, Nida, or anyone else like him. Among them, to the monks refers to these Dharma holders. Saying this, refers to if one says this. Monks refers to these Dharma holders. For a little food, refers to for the five foods and five drinks. To the nuns, refers to these Dharma holders. To teach, refers to higher discipline, higher mind, and higher wisdom. To commit an offense entailing expiation, refers to as before. Among them, here the fundamental offense is distinguished: a monk says to a monk, 'This monk does not teach for a little food, but teaches the nuns for a little food,' whether to himself or to others.

Speaking: The downfall of speaking for a small amount of food becomes a real downfall. The author of this is: a bhikkhu who speaks to a bhikkhuni, not speaking for a small amount of food. This has five branches that become a real downfall: a bhikkhu who speaks to a bhikkhuni, not speaking for a small amount of food, and thinking that this bhikkhu is not speaking for a small amount of food, and for this bhikkhu not being for a small amount of food, spreading rumors by speaking to a bhikkhuni, speaking to oneself or to others, and the other person understanding the meaning. Among these, if the branches are not complete, then blame according to the situation. The downfall of speaking for a small amount of food is the twenty-third. The beginning of the downfall of giving clothes is: The Buddha Bhagavan was in Shravasti, residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. In Shravasti, there was a merchant who married a wife of equal status, and he played with her, rejoiced with her, and enjoyed happiness. When he was old, relatives were exhausted, wealth was exhausted, and enjoyment was exhausted, so he said to his wife: Good wife, I cannot accumulate wealth now, I will go forth. The wife said: Husband, I will also go forth. So he requested his wife to go to Mahaprajapati Gautami, and let her ordain and receive full ordination. He himself also went to Jeta Grove, requested the Sangha of bhikkhus, and went forth and received full ordination. In Shravasti, he was famous and had great merit, and everyone heard that the merchant of Shravasti had gone forth. Therefore, he obtained Dharma robes, food, lodging, the cause of illness, and medicine, and he achieved them. At another time, he wore a reddish-yellow sanghati and went to the summer retreat of that bhikkhuni. That bhikkhuni bowed to his feet with her head, sat in front, and repeatedly observed his sanghati. That bhikkhu said: Sister, do you want this sanghati? She said: Like the remnants of the heavenly realm. I for this

Thinking, "I should give this patched robe, and I will sew another patched robe," he gave her the patched robe and left. Then, the Blessed One, together with the community of monks, went on a pilgrimage to Kosala. Seeing that the monk was without a patched robe and was traveling with his Dharma robes, upper garment, and lower garment, he asked the Venerable Ānanda. The Venerable Ānanda explained in detail how it had happened. The Blessed One said, "Ānanda, do monks give robes to nuns who are not relatives?" The Venerable replied, "Yes, Blessed One." The Blessed One said, "Ānanda, one should not think of a nun who is not a relative, 'Does she have her three Dharma robes complete?' or 'Are they incomplete?' but should simply accept what is received. As for relatives, even if given, one would not accept." After the Blessed One had thus spoken, as before, he again established the rule: "If a monk gives a robe to a nun who is not a relative, he commits an offense of expiation." The place was Śrāvastī. The person was a merchant from Śrāvastī who had gone forth. The affliction was craving for his former wife. The offense was giving a robe to a nun who was not a relative. In this case, "monk" refers to one who belongs to this Dharma. "Nun" also refers to one who belongs to this Dharma. "Not a relative" means that up to the seventh generation from the maternal grandmother and grandfather, and those related by blood, are relatives, but beyond that they are not relatives. "Robe" refers to any of the seven types of cloth: cotton, linen, fine linen, coarse linen, cotton-wool blend, kudzu cloth, and silk. "Giving" means giving without expecting anything in return. "Offense of expiation" means as before. Here, the actual offense is defined as follows: If a monk, other than offering robes to the community of nuns, knowingly gives a suitable robe that covers the three circles to a nun who is not a relative, whether it is lost, praised, for ordination, or unwilling to exchange, it becomes the actual act of the offense of expiation for giving a robe. The agent of this is a nun who is not a relative.
